Kitazawa-kun Is In A Class begins at a high school named Nishiki High School, where all of the popular students appear to be in a single class called Section A. There were three girls and three boys who stood out among the most popular kids. Yagyuu Ayame: the intelligent beauty, Higuchi Kaho: the innocent, energetic queen of extroverts; and Inokawa Meioko: the girl who every guy had a crush on because of her appearance.
When it comes to the popular boys, there was Shira Toruyuusei: The extremely smart boy with rich parents, Egoshi Hironari: The womanizer; and our main character Kitazawa Masashi who came out as the smart and cool kid. We see Kitazawa freaked out as he was surrounded by all these popular kids, and he didn’t want anyone to find out about his dark past, which was a secret he was keeping from everyone.
Kitagawa experienced intense bullying due to his weight, which began when he was young. His classmates would torment him with hurtful names such as “Pigzawa,” starting in elementary school and continuing through junior high. The bullying reached a breaking point when they took a drawing he made of a girl he liked and showed it to her, causing him immense embarrassment and humiliation. This led Kitagawa to work hard to transform his appearance through weight loss so that he could have a new image.
Despite his physical transformation, Kitagawa still felt like a “pig” inside. The sudden attention he received made him uneasy, but he went along with it due to peer pressure and went to a karaoke studio with the popular students. They compelled him to perform a duet with them, and due to their coercion, he ended up singing a song from an old play named “The Dreamless Girl”.
As he was singing, he observed Yagyuu giving him a fierce gaze. He became self-conscious and believed that everyone was mocking him, causing him to quickly flee the studio. Yagyuu chased after him and shouted that he must not reveal her secret to anyone. She explained that she had been the star of the play “The Dreamless Girl” while she was in elementary school, where she portrayed the role of “Ohnuki Ayame”.
Yagyuu confides in him about her past as an actress. She gained a lot of recognition for her role but had to take a break from acting due to personal reasons. Unfortunately, this led to rumors and negative attention, causing her to distance herself from others and change her name to Yagyuu in order to start fresh. She implores him to keep her secret and not reveal it to anyone. Kitagawa reciprocates by also asking her to keep his own secret, which is that he has struggled with being overweight throughout his life.
The following day, Yagyuu begins acting affectionately towards Kitagawa, causing others to tease both of them. They eventually come up with the plan of pretending to be a couple to protect their secrets, as keeping them from each other would be a secure way of ensuring that no one else finds out.

Kitazawa-kun Is In A Class Chapter 2 Recap
The chapter opens with the entire class discussing the sudden development of a relationship between Ayame and Kitagawa. As they walk through the halls, they demonstrate their supposed relationship by linking arms, and when they are alone, Ayame explains to Kitagawa that by pretending to be a couple, all people will talk about is their relationship, and nothing about their pasts will come up. If anything were to surface, they could cover for each other by denying that it happened that way.
The following scene depicts Inokawa, a student from a different class who is Ayame’s best friend, trying to attract Kitagawa’s attention as she has had a crush on him and wants to date him. She attempts to corner him and get uncomfortably close to him in an effort to provoke a reaction or see if he has any interest in her. However, he politely excuses himself and is about to head home when he is interrupted by Shiratori.
We find out that Shiratori is extremely envious of Kitagawa as he has always wanted to date Ayame. He wanted to discover what made Ayame fall for Kitagawa and why he was able to win her heart so easily. He takes Kitagawa to McDonald’s and notices that he only orders an iced tea, and Shiratori assumes that it is these small acts that have impressed Ayame.
Shiratori invites Kitagawa to attend Higuchi’s surprise birthday party, and they agree to meet at a theme park with all their other friends the day before the birthday. When everyone arrives and greets each other, Kitagawa realizes that he has forgotten to bring a present for Higuchi.
