On May 8, KBS 2TV held the production presentation for its upcoming idol program “MA1,” marking the network’s return to the global idol debut scene after about six years since “The Unit.”
“MA1” sets itself apart by featuring participants without affiliated agencies, including notable figures such as popular TikTokers and even North Korean defectors, which has sparked considerable interest among viewers.
Director Ra Hyun-woong highlighted the program’s core theme of “growth,” underscoring the journey of these raw talents. He stated, “We want to escape from the completed idol. They are raw kids. We struggled with how to do the final ending pose, and we had to shoot multiple times.
They are still not familiar and not ripe. I hope rather than focusing too much on perfection, we can watch them grow together.”
In terms of post-debut plans, the director hinted at an “infinite” activity period for the group, emphasizing the potential for long-term success and sustainability. “Since they are boys without affiliation, if they become a debut group here, I think the activity period itself will be infinite. If they continue to be loved and go on, they can go even for 10 years,” Director Ra commented.
“MA1” is scheduled to premiere on May 15th at 10:10 PM (KST), promising a unique and refreshing approach to idol debut programs with its diverse lineup of participants and focus on genuine talent development. The show aims to provide something fresh audiences with the untold stories and potential of its contestants as they set off on their journey towards stardom.
