Causes for the increase in Lung Cancer
Lung cancer has always been said to be a disease mainly that older men get diagnosed with, as men used to be more into smoking and had a higher percentage compared to women, but in recent research by the American Lung Association, a shift has been seen where the percentage of men catching the disease has dropped to 43% for men and has risen to 79% for women.
In a study published in JAMA Oncology, lung cancer is highly found in women aged between 35 and 54 compared to men of the same age. This shift in the percentage graph could be because women are indulging in smoking or because they are exposed to air pollution more than men.
According to a blog post by oncologist John C. Kucharczyk, women tend to have better responses to treatment for diseases. Also, female smokers and non-smokers who caught lung cancer can opt for surgery, chemotherapy, or even a combination, as well as molecular-based treatments or immunotherapy, which are new but quite effective. In the case of non-smokers who have suspected genetic abnormalities, distinguished therapies can make a notable difference.
