Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku Manga Review
“Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku” explores love, friendship, and stepping over limits. Furthermore, I think it inspires its audience to make the same effort. Having friends is a wonderful thing. Finding companions is difficult because friendships are reciprocal relationships. One of the few things that make life worth living is a good friendship. Having a friendship requires mutual effort, mutual care, and mutual compassion. The first step to being friends is to show them you care for them on your own.
The character of Hoshina Subaru exemplifies this perfectly. The MC of our story, Rintaro, attends the largely unremarkable Chidori High School for boys. Through the cake shop his family runs, he meets a sweet girl named Kaoruko, who soon discovers she attends the prestigious Kikyo High School for girls. There is a lot of animosity between these two schools, making the series feel like Romeo and Juliet.
Despite this, it is not the primary focus of this series. Instead, the power that comes from close friendships is more significant. A friend of Kaoruko’s since childhood, Subaru, has always been adamant that Chidori and Kikyo should not get in touch, influenced by her fear of boys. Subaru’s introduction is a barrier to Rintaro and Kaoruko’s relationship, but Rintaro can overcome it.
He eventually convinces Subaru that Rintaro is not the awful delinquent kid she imagined through his actions and sincere attempt to understand Subaru’s view. This manga doesn’t lose any time in introducing its cast; each one feels like a real person with a distinct personality and a clear sense of self. Far from being the only instance of affection and friendship in this manga, Subaru’s friendship with Rintaro is one.
For instance, the character Uzami is always up for a good time, full of energy, and eager to celebrate the accomplishments of his companions. These types of characters are common in anime, but Mikami Saka writes Uzami so that his intention is clear. We’ve all had a friend with too much energy, and Uzami feels like him rather than some cliche. I was also impressed with how well Rintaro’s parents were crafted.
His mom’s pride in her son and her dad’s love for baking are evident in their well-developed characters. They, too, feel like real people. They also give excellent advice and treat their son with utmost love. My struggle is finding ways to explain exactly why these characters break the mold, but perhaps it is simply the way the manga is written, and no moment feels cheap or empty.
I love that everything in the manga works towards something; the gears are always turning. It’s worth mentioning that this manga has stunning art. There are some panels, for example, Kaoruko’s smile, a sunset at the beach, etc, that will linger in your mind, regardless of whether you like them or not. Every character looks different and unique, and the background art is quite nice.
