The celebrities are seen as an idol with PERFECTION! But this belief of the netizens brings a lot of pressure into the life of the celebrities to maintain their position in front of their fans.
Their lives revolve around the cameras, and most of the time they have to keep their faces under a mask of makeup. Whether they come too naturally or with their makeup masquerade, they get backlash.
As a celebrity, it’s hard for them to overcome the backlash from the audience; this creates a desire within them to be as perfect as they can be. This intense desire of the celebrities often leads them to a point when they start editing their pictures.
Normally, when a picture is posted on a social media profile or published in magazines, there’s a process involved, which also includes editing.
None of the photoshoot pictures are edited. But the issues arise for the celebrities when they edit their pictures, which are not from some photoshoot and have professionals involved, as the overediting makes the edits very visible in the picture and makes the artist fall prey to unexpected backlash from the audience.
A similar situation is up for some K-Pop idols who are being called out for editing their pictures.
K-Pop idols that have been editing their pictures
The beauty standard of the virtual world is very high; celebrities have to keep up with it, and this has gone far for some professional K-pop idols. Usually, artists edit their pictures prior to posting them, but sometimes the editing is too overdone or too visible to understand and brings in criticism from netizens.
Lee Mijoo
Lee Sheung-ah, popularly known as Mijoo, had been editing her pictures in a way that was so recognizable that she had to walk through a carpet of awkwardness as her classmates revealed her pictures on national television on ‘Hangout with Yoo’ (airs on Saturday at 18:30 KST).
That picture was so overedited that the building in the background of the picture was bent abnormally, as pointed out by them. To walk away from this moment, the model busted into a laugh herself.
Mijoo is a well-known singer, dancer, and entertainer, she made her debut in November 2019 as a member of the South Korean girls’ group Lovely, under Woollim Entertainment.
Yeri
Kim Ye-Rim, who is professionally known as Yeri, has been facing accusations of editing her pictures before posting them on her Instagram account periodically. Among the popular pictures she posted last year, one of them showed her looking taller than her actual height.
This difference in height in that particular picture had invited a lot of criticism and flak. The netizens have shared their words of agreement in the comment section of the post. Some agreed that the edit in the picture is visible, whereas others defended the idol.
Yeri is a singer and actress by profession; she’s a member of the South Korean girl group, Red Velvet. Yeri was also seen as a host in 2015 at Show! Music Core and The Viewable SM (2016).

There were comments of criticism on the same post, which didn’t stop there but carried forward to her few subsequent posts as well. JooE has recently joined a girl group, Moonland, under MLD Entertainment.
Winter
Kim Min-Jeong, professionally known as Winter, is a member of “Aespa,” a group of South Korean girls that made their debut in November 2022 under SM Entertainment.
Winter had been called out for overediting her photos numerous times, most recently when she posted a picture, she took at the famed Music Bank stairs.
In that post the netizens pointed out the stairs behind her were uneven, which hinted at her overediting skills. Winter also became a member of the supergroup Got the Best in January 2022. The 2023 picture of the star idol, a mirror selfie from the Canne Film Festival, was also showcasing the editing skills of the idol, as the phone in her hand was in its usual distorted condition.
Giselle
The rapper of the ‘Aespa’ South Korean girls’ group, Giselle, also had to face Photoshop allegations. In 2022, a collage of Giselle’s comparison between her at the concert and the picture she posted herself.
The difference between both pictures was undeniable, which even the netizens agreed to, whereas some said it’s fine now that they edit their pictures prior to posting them on social media.
The debate lies in the hands of the netizens now, whether, as an audience, they find it not okay, or they just become understanding and move with a courteous mind that it’s fine for someone to edit their pictures; it’s none of other’s business to interfere in their idol’s personal choices.
