K-pop group NMIXX recently stirred controversy after performing the song “Dokdo is Our Land” during an appearance on the YouTube show ‘MMTG Civilization Express.’ The segment featured a medley of various songs, including SHINee’s “Lucifer” and the Pokémon theme song. NMIXX members each sang a line from different tracks, but their rendition of “Dokdo is Our Land” sparked unexpected backlash.
The performance included Haewon singing “If you tie me down and trap me” from “Lucifer,” Sullyoon’s line “80km away on the East-South from Ullengdo” from “Dokdo is Our Land,” Jiwoo performing a portion of the Pokémon OST, Lily with “There’s a lonely isle for sea birds” from “Dokdo is Our Land,” Bae’s “Whoever insists it’s their land” from the same song, and Kyujin’s line “Here comes the crocodile” from “Crocodile.”
The inclusion of “Dokdo is Our Land” led to a wave of hate comments from Japanese netizens. Many accused NMIXX of engaging in “anti-Japanese actions,” with some even threatening to withdraw their support if the group continued their activities in Japan. The controversy highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding the Dokdo islets, which are claimed by both South Korea and Japan. The islets are a symbol of national pride for South Koreans, due to historical and territorial disputes.
The dispute over Dokdo dates back to the early 20th century, with historical grievances stemming from Japan’s colonization of Korea. The islets have been under South Korean control since the 1950s, with a small police detachment stationed there. This long-standing issue has fueled strong sentiments on both sides.
Despite the backlash, NMIXX continues to make strides in their career. The group recently achieved a significant milestone by winning first place on KBS2’s ‘Music Bank’ with their latest title track, “See That?” from their album ‘Fe3O4: STICK OUT,’ which was released last month. Additionally, NMIXX is set to hold their second fan concert from October 4 to October 6 at the Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul.
