Twitter finally responded to the much-awaited and much-demanded Edit Button for its millions of users. On April 1, 2022 — April Fools Day — Twitter decided to be facetious with the users and posted a tweet saying that they are working on the long-awaited edit feature. The edit button has been a subject of heavy demand by some Twitter users for a long time. The ability to change what you posted on the platform is incredibly intriguing. The microblogging and social networking platform enables users to speak their minds in the form of short “tweets” with a threshold of 280 characters. With a short character limit like that, it’s clear how users not adept at conveying the subtleties in a short amount of words will fail to communicate properly. This leads to a lot of nuance and balance being chucked out of the equation.
However, another and perhaps the most significant hitches with the tweets is that they can’t be edited once they’ve been posted. There’s no way to retrieve the short collection of words other than deletion. However, a usual case with controversial tweets is that they are not really shielded by the deletion feature. Sometimes the one who has posted something problematic or controversial in the past would have to trace back the tweet they shared with the world years ago. Many times it eludes the user, but in cases where it doesn’t, it’s too late as the people embroiled and taking part in the new controversy of the user already screenshot the age-old tweets. This calls for the need for an edit button to take back what once has been said.

How Are People Responding To The Twitter Edit Button Tweet?
While numerous users have been rallying for an edit button for the tweets, many also oppose it. The opposing voices cited reasons like it will affect quoted tweets, and linked articles, removing the original context. Plus, the raw and immediate, and unaltered nature of the tweets is what the platform is known for.
As soon as Twitter posted the tweet about the edit button, millions of users flocked to the replies section with varied reactions. Some welcomed it, some opposed it, and then some called out the obvious April Fools prank it was.
Here are some of the different responses by the users to the tweet;

Twitter doesn't need an edit button cos if this feature is added, it will cause complete chaos which in turn will ruin the platform; Twitter thrives on raw tweets, editing a tweet will affect the quoted retweets, replies & shared articles contextually. An edit button is a no-no.
