A thriller movie lightly built on the upshots of the operations-Mosses and Joshua; ‘The Red Sea Driving Resort’ premiered on Netflix for the first time on July 31, 2019. Based on true events, the film revolves around the attempts made by the Ethiopians and the Israeli agents to rescue the Jewish Ethiopians who were trapped in Sudan and relocate them to Israel.
The ever-charming Chris Evans plays the lead role of the Israeli agent who has to undertake a hole-and-corner operation to save the refugees who had been subject to oppression and acute tyranny at the hands of the people in Sudan. To actualize the mission, Ari Levinson, a.k.a. Chris Evans, along with his team, set their plan in motion as they picked Arous Village, their long-abandoned holiday spot, as a base to smuggle the refugees, and have them sent to Israel safely.
Michael K. Williams, Alex Hassell, Greg Kinnear, Mark Ivanir, Chris Chalk, Haley Bannett, and Alessandro Nivola are some of the other cast members who perfectly lived up to the reputation of the characters that they were. But how far is the story true?
The Red Sea Diving Resort is based on true events.
What could be a better place for vacationing if not a resort surrounded by water as clear as crystal? Was Valley seem like a perfect spot for a dream vacation come true back in the 1980s? As appealing as it may sound, what thousands of tourists vacationing at Arous Valley did not know was that what seemed like a perfect beach holiday was a base meant for devising plans and carrying out one of the biggest evacuations in history.
As far as reality is concerned, the agents at Arous Valley were disguised as guards and instructors. The night dives were just an eyewash to deceive the onlookers and carry in with their mission of saving lives. It was just another intrepid road to smuggling multiple Jews and submitting them back to Israel.
The incident sounds no less than the plot of some Hollywood movie, but this was indeed a reality that came to light globally, causing people to feel chills running down their spines after Netflix dropped it. Netflix did its very best to bring the dramatic account of events that took place at Arous Village in its small frame.

An operation of a lifetime
Also titled Operations Brother, the sole intention of this undertaking was to move the Ethiopian Jews who had been illegally kept in Sudan to Israel. This group of people belonged to the perplexing community of Beta, whose origin is still a mystery to many. The inherent disposition of the mission was so fragile politically that nobody could decipher the reality associated with this.
‘Dani’, the Mossad agent, had been entrusted with the responsibility of this mission. Finding the Arous Village was only a game of chance while he was hunting for shambles or deserted places to bring their mission to life.
Arous could not have been successfully developed and run had it not been for agent Gad Shimron who had been taken under arrest by the security in Sudan and questioned thoroughly.
To him and to everyone else, this was one life-changing experience. It was either Hit or Miss for them. A dash of dramatic bent is always there in the movies, but this incident, in particular, was very intense and nerve-racking, especially for the agents who had been entrusted with the lives of so many people. However, the mission was nowhere close to smooth sailing.
There were multiple occasions when the agents disguised as instructors had almost blown their covers. One such incident took place in the March of 1982 when the military unit of Sudan fired on the Israelis, believing they were up to no good and were smugglers. Thanks to the prompt presence of the Mossad agent whose quick thinking caused the Sudanese to stutter a hesitant apology.
Is Red Sea Diving Resort Based on a Real Story
To put it more precisely, it is safe to say that this movie directed and written by Gideon Raff, is ‘inspired’ by the events that occurred in 1980. The Hollywood license would always prompt more drama and more suspense. The resort was not a medium to smuggle Jews, it was only used as a base to realize the purpose of their mission. With so much happening at the resort right under everyone’s noses, the resort was still doing fine and entertaining the visitors as it should have.
A mind-blogging movie stemming directly from real-world experiences, ‘The Red Sea Diving Resort’ is a must-watch for anybody who is looking for a thrilling Sunday experience. Have you watched this Netflix production yet?
