Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the need for restraint in the Middle East during his visit to Washington amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
Sudani, in discussions with U.S. officials, including President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, called for efforts to prevent further escalation in the region.
Acknowledging Iraq’s unique position as an ally to both the United States and Iran, Sudani highlighted Iraq’s role in facilitating Iran’s recent drone and missile strike on Israel.
Iraqi airspace served as a key route for the unprecedented attack, with Iran informing Iraqi officials and other regional countries ahead of the operation.
During meetings with U.S. counterparts, Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to international law and humanitarian principles, stressing the importance of protecting civilians, especially women and children.
He expressed Iraq’s rejection of any repression against civilians and emphasized the need to respect international norms and diplomatic missions.
President Biden reiterated Washington’s commitment to Israel’s security while also expressing support for efforts to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza.
Biden emphasized the critical partnership between the United States and Iraq, particularly in the fight against ISIS and in maintaining strategic agreements between the two nations.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ali Tamim underscored Iraq’s concerns about being drawn into a wider conflict that could threaten international security.
Tamim called for self-restraint and adherence to diplomatic protocols and international laws to prevent further escalation.
While U.S. officials welcomed economic reform plans proposed by Sudani, concerns lingered regarding the influence of Iran-backed groups in Iraq. The discussions also addressed the potential reduction of U.S. troop numbers in Iraq, with military leaders conducting assessments to inform future decisions.
