To mark the 10th anniversary of its release, Interstellar made a return to theaters, and it has been one of the most successful theatrical events of the year. While the film didn’t pull in massive full numbers, it earned impressive amounts per theater, taking the top spot in box office earnings in this category.
Even though Interstellar was only shown in 321 theaters over the weekend, it earned $3.6 million, which placed it at number 7 in the box office rankings. This was nearly double the per-theater earnings of the top two movies of the weekend, Moana 2 and Wicked.
By Monday and Tuesday of the same week, the film’s total domestic earnings reached $200 million. On top of that, it earned $440 million from foreign markets. This brought its worldwide total to $642 million, making it the 26th-highest-grossing film in the history of Paramount Pictures.
When Interstellar first premiered on December 6, it had been scheduled for a limited run of only one week. However, the film performed so well during its initial re-release that Paramount decided to extend its run due to the high demand from audiences.
Who Stars in ‘Interstellar’?
The movie grossed $4.6 million in just 165 theaters, with a per-theater average of over $27,000. In comparison, during the same weekend, Moana 2 earned $12,000 per theater and Wicked brought in $9,000 per theater. This shows that Interstellar was out-performing these films on a per-theater basis, even though it had fewer theaters showing it.
Interstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan, was a major hit when it was first released in 2014. It grossed over $677 million worldwide at that time. The anniversary re-release is an additional boost to Paramount’s earnings from the film.
While Interstellar was already a financial success, this extra income from the 10th anniversary has only increased the film’s profitability. Paramount has also had a strong year, with other box office hits like A Quiet Place: Day One and Smile 2, both of which out-earned their production budgets by large margins.
The return of Interstellar to theaters gave fans another chance to experience the epic science fiction film on the big screen. The movie is known for its stunning visual effects, compelling story, and its emotional scheme of love, sacrifice, and the survival of humanity.
The film follows Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, as he leads a team of astronauts on a mission to find a new habitable planet for humanity as Earth faces ecological collapse. Anne Hathaway stars as Dr. Brand, one of the astronauts, and Jessica Chastain plays Cooper’s daughter, Murph.
Interstellar also features notable performances from John Lithgow, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Caine, and Matt Damon. The film’s ensemble cast and gripping storyline have made it a fan favorite, and its 10th-anniversary re-release allowed new audiences to discover the film while giving old fans a chance to relive the magic.
Though Interstellar is no longer playing in theaters, fans can continue to enjoy the movie at home on Paramount+. The re-release marked a successful return to the big screen and cemented Interstellar’s place as one of the standout films of the decade.
