In a unanimous decision, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) directed Israel to guarantee the prompt delivery of essential food supplies to the Palestinian population in Gaza. Citing deteriorating living conditions and the imminent threat of famine, the ICJ emphasized the urgent need for action.
The ruling stems from a case initiated by South Africa, alleging Israel’s involvement in state-led genocide in Gaza.
In January, the ICJ had instructed Israel to abstain from activities falling under the Genocide Convention and ensure its forces refrain from genocidal acts against Palestinians.
In its latest order, the ICJ reinforced its previous directives while broadening the scope to include uninterrupted access to basic services and humanitarian aid, encompassing food, water, electricity, medical supplies, and healthcare throughout Gaza.
Specifically, the court urged Israel to enhance the capacity and availability of land crossings, keeping them operational for as long as necessary.
They stressed that failure to act promptly could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, leading to dire consequences for the Palestinian population.
Additionally, the ICJ mandated Israel to submit a detailed report within a month outlining the steps taken to comply with the court’s orders.
The decision comes amid escalating tensions in the region and mounting international pressure to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
It reflects the ICJ’s commitment to upholding human rights and providing relief to vulnerable populations affected by conflict and instability.
