Inside The Tower of London Season 5: Recap
The first episode revealed that the Tower was preparing for its most ambitious installment in September 2021. For the Platinum Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Tower of London will add a new natural wildlife habitat named Superbloom to the ancient moat.
Superbloom is a massive project that would need to spread 10,000 tonnes of soil inside the moat to plant 20 million seeds for the Platinum Jubilee week in June 2022. Professor Nigel, a horticulture expert, is testing different plant species at his test plots in Sheffield in preparation, while Rhiannon, the head of community outreach projects at Historic Royal Palaces, is finalizing the intricate design with the landscaping team.
Emma Rousell, a trainee at Beefeater, is busy at work. She is the newest member of the Yeoman Body and must first pass “the Story,” the Beefeater’s legendary 21-page trip through 1,000 years of Tower history, to become a full-fledged Yeoman Warder.
While in episode 2, we saw that The Tower is getting ready for its biggest installation yet in March 2022: turning the moat into a massive flower display to honor the Platinum Jubilee of the Queen. The installation, also called Superbloom, took three years to come to life and has been termed the most difficult mission the Tower has attempted.
Archaeologists have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to investigate the soil of the moat for artifacts as the team digs trenches for necessary utilities. A cannonball fragment and even a syringe that would be used to administer mercury to treat sexual transmission illnesses in World War I soldiers are among the artifacts they find as evidence of the Tower’s long military past.
It’s not the first time people have looked for hidden riches in the Tower; Yeoman Sergeant Clive Towell learns how the memoirist Samuel Pepys dug in the Tower’s vaults when it was said that a dishonest Constable of the Tower had stashed his gold there in the 1650s.
With only five weeks left until Superbloom, the Tower’s makeover of its ancient moat into a massive floral installation to mark the Platinum Jubilee is set to open to the public; episode three transports us to April 2022 at the Tower. However, the 20 million floral seeds that were sown in the ditch for the exhibition have been damaged by one of the springs in the history of the UK.
Professor Nigel Dunnet, the horticulture specialist in charge of Superbloom’s planting plan, has been watering plants for weeks to prevent a catastrophe, but more radical measures may be required.
