Miyeon, who is a member of the K-pop girl group G(I)-DLE, who has a rebellious concept, finally made her much-awaited solo debut with the title track ‘Drive’ from her first mini-album ‘MY’. A press conference was held to commemorate the release of Miyeon’s solo debut mini-album ‘MY’ in Hapjeong Dong, Seoul. Here, she shared her album-making process, the reactions of the other G(I)-DLE members, and gushed about a song that was a gift from her fellow member Yuqi.
Cho Miyeon made her debut in the CUBE Entertainment girl group G(I)-DLE in 2018, along with members Soyeon, Yuqi, Minnie, Soojin, and Shuhua. It is famously known that Miyeon had previously trained in YG Ent. and was amongst the final member line-up of their girl group BLACKPINK before moving to CUBE Entertainment.
The name of Miyeon’s first solo album, “MY,” contains a multitude of meanings: firstly, the letters are the abbreviation of Miyeon’s Korean name, then the title signifies how she has made the album her own with her own unique colors, and lastly, ‘MY’ could also mean ‘I,’ which is a reference to her group’s name G(I)-DLE.
On Miyeon’s Solo Debut Album Making Process
Miyeon says, “I wanted to put every bit of myself into this album, I don’t know how far I’ve succeeded, but I did try my very best to put all of my everything into it. I wanted to show everyone the kind of music I have always wanted to do. Since this is my first solo album, I wanted to approach it comfortably rather than obsessing about showing certain things to a tee.”
About the initiation of the album-making process, Miyeon says, “I went back to thinking of the kind of music I wanted to present to the world back when I first dreamt of becoming a singer. That is how this album was born. I hope everyone enjoys listening to it, and they find comfort in my music.”
Miyeon Solo Debut Title Track’s Genre Choice
The title track of Miyeon’s solo album ‘MY’ is ‘Drive‘. The message behind the song is to “never lose one’s unique colors and to always move forward”; the song is a message of support to people who are trying their best not to lose themselves while going through a difficult time.
On why she chose Rock as the genre of her choice this time, Miyeon says, “I wanted to put out music that differed from the output of my girl-group G(I)-DLE. I wanted songs that differed from my previous OST songs and other songs I featured in, so I rejected songs of that type and eventually ended up choosing ‘Drive’ as my title track.”
But what about any goals with her solo debut? Miyeon said, “Of course, I will be happy if the songs do well on the charts. Even if it doesn’t end up winning first place on the charts and music shows, I will be happy as long as a lot of people listen to my songs and end up enjoying them!”
Yuqi’s Gift To Miyeon On Her Solo Debut Album
Miyeon’s solo debut album, which covers various genres, has songs like “Rose,” “Softly,” “Te Amo,” “Charging,” and “Rain/Sonagi”. Amongst them, Miyeon picks “Rain” as the track that is most special to her, as it’s the song that is composed by fellow G(I)-DLE member Yuqi and has lyrics written by Miyeon herself!
“The track ‘Rain’ was a gift from Yuqi to me. And I wrote the lyrics to it too. The production of the song was quickly complete, as I found that some lyrics that I had written in my early twenties ended up matching really well with Yuqi’s composition.”
Unexpectedly, Miyeon says she had no difficulties preparing for her solo debut despite her busy schedule due to G(I)-DLE’s recent comeback ‘Tomboy’: “I had been slowly working on the album during the break period from G(I)-DLE’s activities, so rather than the difficulties of not having time, I felt the joy of the new challenge to a greater extent. Working on the album felt like putting together a puzzle piece by piece, so it was delightful.”

Miyeon talked about the reaction and reception of her solo debut by her fellow G(I)-DLE members: “They have been helping me a lot ever since the beginning stages of choosing songs for the album. Of course, they complimented the finished product a lot, and they liked the title song ‘Drive’ a lot too! So they always sang along to the track and monitored the whole making process too.”
