The Prison Break reboot has officially entered production, giving fans the first major update on Hulu’s long-awaited return to the franchise. The series is now known as Prison Break: Black Creek, a title that points directly to the new prison at the center of the story. Hulu confirmed the production news on September 10 through a brief announcement welcoming viewers to Black Creek Penitentiary and confirming that the series is coming to Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
The project has been in development for several years, but the production announcement marks a significant step forward. The new series is designed to expand the Prison Break universe rather than recreate the story of Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows.
Black Creek Introduces a New Prison Story
The upcoming series follows Cassidy Collins, played by Emily Browning, a former soldier who takes a position as a corrections officer at Black Creek Penitentiary. Her decision puts her inside one of the country’s most dangerous prisons as she attempts to prove herself and pursue a deeply personal goal.
That premise gives the reboot a different perspective from the original series. Rather than focusing primarily on an elaborate prison escape plan, Black Creek puts a central character inside the prison as a member of its staff.
The ensemble also includes Lukas Gage as Jackson, a politician beginning his first congressional campaign, and Drake Rodger as Tommy, an inmate who has spent a decade behind bars. Clayton Cardenas plays Ghost, while Myles Bullock portrays Darius “Red” Lewis. Georgie Flores, JR Bourne, and other performers round out the cast.
The Reboot Remains Connected to the Original Series
Although Black Creek introduces a new group of characters, it remains connected to the larger Prison Break universe. The original series was created by Paul Scheuring, who is also involved in the reboot as an executive producer.
Elgin James, known for Mayans M.C. and The Outlaws, is developing the reboot. He serves as both the writer and an executive producer, while Scheuring, Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz are also attached as executive producers.
The creative connection to the original show gives the reboot an established foundation while allowing the new story to stand on its own.
