Cowboy Bebop: The Movie has returned to Japanese theaters with a new 4K remaster celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary. However, bringing the 2001 animated feature to modern screens required considerably more work than simply increasing its resolution. Director Shinichiro Watanabe revealed that the restoration team spent months manually removing imperfections from individual shots to preserve the film’s original visual quality.

During an advance screening event at TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku on October 23, 2026, Watanabe discussed the restoration alongside composer Yoko Kanno. Screenwriter Dai Sato also attended the event, which was covered by Animate Times.

Watanabe explained that the original movie was produced during the traditional cel-animation era, when animators layered multiple transparent sheets to create depth and visual complexity. He was particularly careful about the film’s compositions, wanting every shot to convey the feeling of multiple environments existing beyond the immediate frame.

However, these production techniques created additional challenges when the original footage was prepared for a high-resolution presentation.

Bandai Namco Filmworks Manually Cleaned the Film Without AI

According to Watanabe, increasing the resolution of older animated footage can make imperfections that were previously difficult to notice considerably more visible. Dust, scratches, and shadows from layered animation cels can become distracting when the image is presented in greater detail.

The director explained that Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was particularly challenging because of its extensive use of layered artwork. The restoration team therefore needed to carefully inspect and clean individual shots rather than rely on automated processing.

Watanabe recalled giving the production team a straightforward instruction:

“I just said, ‘Please erase everything. I’m counting on you,’ and left (laughs).”

The director praised Bandai Namco Filmworks and its post-production team for their work, revealing that they spent several months manually removing imperfections from individual cuts.

Importantly, the restoration was completed without AI assistance. The painstaking cleanup relied on human effort to maintain the original film’s visual character while improving its presentation.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Returns for Its 25th Anniversary

Originally released in Japanese theaters on September 1, 2001, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, also known as Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, takes place between episodes 22 and 23 of the original television anime. The 114-minute feature follows Spike Spiegel and the Bebop crew as they investigate a terrorist attack in Alba City on Mars.

A mysterious explosion releases an unknown threat, prompting the Martian government to announce a massive bounty of 300 million woolongs for the person responsible. The opportunity sends Spike, Jet, Faye, and Ed searching for the culprit.

The 4K remaster began its special theatrical screenings across Japan on October 30, 2026, under Watanabe’s supervision. The official Cowboy Bebop website also revealed a newly commissioned anniversary visual featuring character designs by Toshihiro Kawamoto.

An international theatrical release for the remastered movie has not yet been announced. Nevertheless, the restoration offers fans another opportunity to experience one of the franchise’s most celebrated stories with its original hand-drawn aesthetic preserved.
