Sean Doherty’s death came as a shock to the world during the 00s. He was a politician from Ireland. Sean served the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Eireann for the longest time in his political career. Sean Doherty was born and raised in Ireland. He then studied at the University College Dublin. His career in politics started not before 1965. It was when he established himself as a member of the Garda Siochana. He worked as a detective in Silvo. In the early 70s, Sean decided to join the Special Branch in Dublin.
Sean was born into a very political family. They have a long history of public service jobs as we as political involvement. He lived in County Roscommon. It was in 1973 that he took a seat on Roscommon County Council. This spot was provided to him after the death of his father. Sean soon married after being settled into a great career ahead of him. He tied knots to Maira Nangle. Maura is the sister of an Irish musician named Carmel Gunning. The two shared four daughters together.
How Sean Doherty Passed Away?
Sean Doherty died in 2005. His death was a result of a brain hemorrhage, as disclosed by the hospitals. This tragic news fell upon his family’s shoulders while they were on a family holiday in County Donegal. Sean took his last breath at Letterkenny General Hospital, where he was admitted after showing some signs of weakness.
Just like any politician, Doherty also was involved in various controversies. After he left the office, it was revealed that he ordered the tapping of the home telephones of the journalists. This news was published in the newspaper back then. It was revealed that he was interfering in the technicalities of the Garda and its administration. His motives were laid out to be both personal and political, which is obviously illegal. After this news broke out, he signed his resignation in a few days only. Although, his seat was given to him once again in 1984.
At What Post Did Doherty Serve?
Well, this controversial scandal did not leave him alone for all and rose to fame once again in 1992. Yes, it was when Fianna Fail was haunted by this scandal. In an interview arranged for Sean Doherty, he revealed that the various transcripts of the conversation were revealed by him to Charles Haughey. Haughey used to be a Taoiseach in 1982.
The Fianna Fail Party suffered consequences of the same. We saw that earlier, Doherty has denied all these claims but now was ready to accept. Haughey, too said that he had no part in such a scandal. In 1992, he was forced to resign from his office as a result of the scandal. Doherty resigned as well, although he came back to power at the general election that happened in 1992. He held this seat for 10 years until 2002, when the general elections took place once again.
