Is It Worth Watching?
You start watching the first season of the show and realize how full it is of extreme masculine energy, corruption, and brutal gang wars, which continue on till the end of the second season. Actor Jeremy Renner plays Mike McLusky, who becomes the mayor of this little fictional town right after his older brother dies. Renner’s character is a stoic, neutral-faced individual who just wants peace for all.
He is fierce and highly convincing as Mike in the show and leaves a long-lasting impression on the audience. But while his character is twisted and complex, the show itself is very slow-paced, with maker Tyler Sheridan taking a painfully long time to go through every level of injustice or inequality in the town, to the point that it gets almost repetitive and boring.
And though the show is a great commentary on the American prison system or the death penalty, it does not, for the most part, feel novel or unique. A lot of the time, the show just feels like a remake version of similar crime dramas like The Wire, Law & Order, and We Own This City. The plot and the characters may feel familiar to you, but this is not to say that the show is not interesting or well-made.
What many fans have liked about the show is how raw it is when it comes to exploring the actual realities of many Americans, one that not a lot of people like talking about openly. The street gangs, corrupt local cops, and the constant tension among them is something so real even in reality, and the show, Mayor of Kingstown, does a great job of portraying it.
Another thing that has to be appreciated about this show, despite its repetitive nature or familiar storyline, is how none of the characters are ‘just good’ or ‘just bad’. Almost all of them are tainted grey with things they have to protect and fight for.
This aspect of the show, honestly, just makes it refreshing and realistic. The strong characters within the show hold on desperately to whatever they can just to survive and make a living, reflecting the reality of the world that we all live in.
So, If you are a fan of crime dramas, then this one will definitely suck you in and keep you interested with its complex storylines and layered characters that persist till the finale episode of season two. If you are done watching all of the other crime shows and have been on a hunt for a similar dark, crime-related show, then this might just be the show for you.
