Experienced homesteader Marty Raney teaches struggling homesteaders how to survive in the woods while touring the nation. He does this with the help of his daughter Misty Raney, a farmer, and his son Matt Raney, a hunter and fisherman.
The Raney family also includes Misty Raney. Despite the high stakes, the Raney family remains committed to protecting the other homes’ welfare and equipping them for the unfavourable consequences of nature. Each family has to choose whether to spend their first year in the wild or go back to society.

Living in buses, homesteaders in Virginia try to make ends meet. The Raneys organize one of the biggest family reunion rescue efforts in history in an attempt to reunite their family after learning that their son has been moved to live with his grandma while the homestead recovers.
On an Idaho ranch where millennials living off the grid contend with problems like dead soil, regular landslides, and visits from grizzly bears, the Raneys meet their match. The rescue attempt is put in jeopardy when COVID strikes one of the Raneys again, making the situation worse.
Following an urgent call from Central Alaska, the Raneys find a family that has all they need but lacks the knowledge to realize their wish. Because below-freezing conditions are predicted, the Raneys must help them winterize and get ready for the approaching spring.
When the Raneys arrive at a state homestead in Washington, they find that the couple’s cabin has fallen. Finding a way to combat the hazards of predators, food, and shelter is critical as they face the impending winter months and a lethal predator funnel on the land.
A farmstead in Kentucky that was built atop the ancient ruins of a long-abandoned mining town is subject to biblical floods. To lift the family above the sea, Misty builds her first floating greenhouse, Matt builds a cow escape pod, and Marty fixes the original barn.
Hurricane-force winds decimate a Colorado war veteran’s family and their horse stable, making survival all but impossible. But when the Raneys reveal their larger scheme to others, they unleash some of their most creative works to date.

The title for the episode is “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” A near-fatal catastrophe puts the dream of Oregon homesteaders at risk. When the Raneys get there, they have to perform a difficult rescue since a crumbling bridge has shut them off from their land and they have to use inventive methods to get past the tight building codes.
