Kingdom Hearts’ Kairi Voice Actress Hayden Panettiere

Hayden Panettiere, the actress who voiced Kairi in the Kingdom Hearts series, has died at the age of 36. Her death was confirmed on August 16, 2026, by her representative, with ABC News reporting that the family confirmed her passing through her publicist. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed at the time of writing.

Panettiere leaves behind a career that began when she was an infant and eventually made her a familiar face across television, film, and video games. For gaming audiences, however, her work as Kairi remains one of her most recognizable contributions, particularly among longtime Kingdom Hearts fans.

Hayden Panettiere’s Kingdom Hearts Legacy

Panettiere first voiced Kairi in the original Kingdom Hearts, released in North America in 2002, and later returned for Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Square Enix and Buena Vista Games officially listed her among the English voice cast for Kingdom Hearts II, alongside Haley Joel Osment as Sora and David Gallagher as Riku.

She also voiced Xion in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, expanding her connection to the franchise beyond Kairi.

Her connection to gaming extended beyond Kingdom Hearts. Panettiere portrayed Samantha Giddings in the original Until Dawn and returned for additional material connected to the 2024 remake, giving her another memorable role in a major video game franchise.

Outside gaming, Panettiere became widely recognized as Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Ice Princess, and the Scream franchise, while her final film role was reportedly the 2026 psychological thriller Sleepwalker.

Panettiere’s death comes during an important period for Kingdom Hearts, with Square Enix preparing celebrations for the franchise’s 25th anniversary in 2027. Her performances as Kairi and Xion remain part of the series’ English-language history and will continue to connect her work with generations of fans.
