Twenty years after Kyon first encountered Haruhi Suzumiya, the eccentric girl determined to find aliens, time travelers, and espers, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is receiving a major anniversary celebration. Kadokawa has officially announced a dedicated 20th anniversary exhibition that will run for three weeks in Tokyo this summer, marking one of the biggest highlights in the franchise’s yearlong celebration.

The exhibition honors the beloved anime and light novel series that left a lasting impact on anime fans and helped shape a generation of fandom.

The SOS Brigade Returns to Ikebukuro

The 20th anniversary exhibition, titled SOS Exhibition: The Exhibition of Haruhi Suzumiya Who Greatly Spread Excitement All Over the World, will take place from August 10 to August 30, 2026, at Sunshine City Exhibition Hall D in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district. The special event celebrates one of anime’s most influential franchises and gives longtime fans a chance to revisit its legacy.

The exhibition is divided into two main sections. The first explores the anime’s production history through original artwork, behind-the-scenes materials, and a life-size recreation of the iconic SOS Brigade clubroom. The second section focuses on the lasting cultural impact of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It looks back at how the series influenced anime fandom around the world and helped shape modern anime culture over the past two decades.

Tickets and Exclusive Merchandise

General admission tickets are priced at 2,500 yen and are available through Lawson Ticket. Fans looking for exclusive memorabilia can also purchase a 2,000 yen merchandise bundle that includes a replica SOS Brigade Leader armband, inspired by Haruhi Suzumiya’s signature accessory from the series.

The exhibition will also feature a selection of newly illustrated merchandise created specifically for the anniversary event. In addition, organizers have confirmed that an official exhibition guidebook will be available for purchase on-site. The guidebook will provide visitors with detailed information about the exhibits while serving as a commemorative keepsake for the anniversary celebration.

Part of a Bigger 20th Anniversary Celebration

The Tokyo exhibition is one part of The Gratitude of Haruhi Suzumiya, a large-scale anniversary campaign launched by Kadokawa in November 2025. The project celebrates 20 years since the anime first premiered on April 3, 2006, and includes multiple events and commemorative releases throughout the anniversary year.

The celebration began with a special theatrical revival of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. The 2010 anime film returned to theaters across 32 locations in Japan, expanding beyond its original theatrical release and giving fans another opportunity to experience one of the franchise’s most acclaimed stories on the big screen.

Kadokawa has continued the anniversary campaign by releasing a new commemorative key visual illustrated by original character designer Noizi Ito. The publisher also shared a three-minute retrospective video on its official YouTube channel featuring congratulatory messages from the original Japanese voice cast, including Aya Hirano, Tomokazu Sugita, Minori Chihara, Yuko Goto, and Daisuke Ono.

Why The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Still Matters

Directed by Tatsuya Ishihara at Kyoto Animation, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya remains one of the most influential anime of the 2000s. The series became known for its unconventional non-chronological broadcast order and played a major role in establishing Kyoto Animation as one of the industry’s most respected studios.

Based on the light novel series by Nagaru Tanigawa, the story follows Kyon, an ordinary high school student whose life changes after meeting Haruhi Suzumiya. Unaware of her reality-altering powers, Haruhi forms the SOS Brigade in search of aliens, time travelers, and espers, drawing Kyon into a series of extraordinary adventures.

The franchise has remained active long after its second television season aired in 2009. New light novels, spinoff projects, and anniversary campaigns have kept the series in the spotlight. A recent crowdfunding campaign also reached its funding goal within days, reflecting the franchise’s dedicated fanbase.
