Robbie Coltrane, the actor who played the iconic role of Rubeus Hagrid from the Harry Potter movie series, has unfortunately passed away at the age of 72. After hearing about Robbie’s death, movie fans from all around the world took to the internet to show their love for the late Robbie Coltrane. The man who played one of the most iconic characters from one of our favorite childhood films, Harry Potter.
Though it has been 11 years since the Harry Potter franchise came to an end, deep in our hearts, we could still feel the warmth and positive energy that Robbie spread through his character Rubeus Hagrid.
Hagrid was a calm, loyal & very much friendly character who was always there for Harry. However, Harry lost his parents at a very early age and was never able to feel their love or was able to spend time with them. But it was Hagrid who tried to give him the comfort of a family as much as he could. And even after all these years, those memories of Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid are still present in our minds.

Throughout his career, Robbie Coltrane starred in a wide variety of movies & television shows. Though much of Robbie’s best performances & characters often get shadowed by his iconic character Rubeus Hagrid. But there are some of his works that are worth checking out.
In 1987 Robbie starred as a lead character in a comedy-drama TV series called Tutti Frutti, which centers on the daily comedic life of a “rock n roll band.” For his performance, Robbie received a nomination for “The British Academy Television Award for Best Actor.”
It was Robbie’s first role as a criminal psychologist “Dr. Eddie Fitz” from the TV show Crackers, that actually earned him his first “Academy Television Award for Best Actor.” The other television show that earned him critical acclaim was “National Treasure.” Some of the popular movies in which Robbie Coltrane worked are “Pixar’s Brave,” The Harry Potter movie series, etc…He also acted in two of Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond movies, “Golden Eye” & “The World Is Not Enough.”
How Did Robbie Coltrane Die?
Robbie Coltrane suffered from “Osteoarthritis,” a joint disease that causes swelling & stiffness of joints. Robbie mentioned his disease in one of his interviews, where he mentioned how tough it is to live with Osteoarthritis, “Every day is a painful day,” he said. In 2019, his condition got much worse & finally, he had to use a wheelchair. After constantly being ill for over two years, Robbie died on “14 October 2022”.
Upon his death, many of his fans & celebrities showed their condolence for the late actor. Celebrities like JK Rowling took to Twitter to share their memory with the late actor. For JK Rowling, Robbie was the first choice for Rubeus Hagrid. In her tweet, she expresses how deeply she enjoyed the time with Robbie, and she praised the man’s gentle heart and his kindness.

Along with JK Rowling, the Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe shared his final words for Robbie; he said: “How Robbie was one of the funniest people he has ever met & how he used to make everyone laugh when they were kids, on the sets of Harry Potter.”
Daniel also says that “He has very special memories of Robbie during the shooting of The Prisoner of Azkaban when the shooting halted due to rain, and they all used to stay at Hagrid’s hut, he used to keep everyone’s morale up by cracking funny jokes.” He feels incredibly lucky that he was able to work with him, but at the same time, he’s very sad that Robbie is no longer with us.
