Gülcemal – Story Premise
The title ‘Gülcemal’ comes from the male protagonist, Gülcemal, played by Murat Ünalmış, who is a ruthless, merciless monster nursing an open wound from childhood, courtesy of his mother who abandoned him and their family for her lover.
30 years before the present in the story, Gülcemal’s mother, Zafer, is a remarkable beauty with a long line of suitors. However, she meets an unfortunate situation in her life when she is forced to marry Saim and leave Mustafa, the man she loves. Suffering in her unhappy marriage, Zafer gives birth to a son and daughter but is unable to love and cherish them as a mother. At the first opportunity, she flees away to Mustafa, leaving behind her grieving family as Saim hangs himself to death.
Gülcemal blames his mother for his father’s demise and their broken family, and at a young age, wields a bread knife to murder Mustafa, incurring Zafer’s wrath, who curses him to remain unloved his entire life.
He wishes revenge upon Zafer in a way where he makes her desperate enough to call for him as her son and make her say that she is glad to have a son like him. Due to his scarred childhood, Gülcemal grows up to be a resentful monster, and it might be Zafer’s curse proving true that he has never experienced love in his twenty years of life. Even with all the power and riches that he has earned, Gülcemal is alone and hurting.
His life takes a turn when he stumbles upon the beautiful yet mysterious Deva (Melis Sezen), an expert tailor with whom he begins a strange enmity. Gülcemal is amused by Deva, while the latter hates his guts and cruelty. They are polar opposites which just might be the reason for their unmistakable attraction toward one another.
