Rockstar Games is putting significant writing resources into the small details that players may only notice while exploring Grand Theft Auto 6. The studio has assembled dedicated teams to create pedestrian conversations, advertisements, comedy, and other forms of incidental dialogue that help bring the fictional state of Leonida to life.

The details come from Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s Senior Vice President of Narrative, who discussed the game’s writing process in an interview with LOVE Magazine. The October 5 interview provides a closer look at how Rockstar is approaching the open-world details surrounding Jason and Lucia’s main story.

Rockstar’s official website describes GTA 6 as a story set across Leonida and Vice City, where Jason and Lucia become caught in a criminal conspiracy after an easy score goes wrong. The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

GTA 6 HAS DEDICATED WRITERS FOR NPC CONVERSATIONS

Humphries explained that Rockstar has created a specific group of writers focused on the conversations players will overhear while walking through the game’s world.

“We have a specific team of pedestrian dialogue writers in LA,”

Humphries said, while explaining that advertising and comedy writers are also working across New York, Los Angeles, and London. The teams bring different backgrounds and perspectives to the writing while sharing Rockstar’s interest in humor and the absurdity of modern life.

The studio does not simply consider this material filler. Humphries said Rockstar has brought together “an amazing team of writers and creatives” to create the “background noise” that makes the city and world come alive.

He added that the team does not view these elements as background material because

“It’s all part of the tapestry of the game and creates the experience of living in this wild world.”

The approach means GTA 6’s world will contain writing that exists outside the central narrative involving Jason and Lucia. Pedestrian conversations, fictional advertisements, comedy, radio content, and other environmental details can provide additional glimpses into Leonida’s culture as players travel through Vice City and its surrounding areas.

Writing Director James Horton further explained that Rockstar established a new Los Angeles writing team specifically for pedestrian dialogue, alongside a production team dedicated to the same area of development. The goal is for conversations to feel convincing whether players merely catch fragments while moving through the city or stop to listen.

With GTA 6 approaching its November release, Rockstar’s comments suggest that some of the game’s most memorable moments could come from interactions players never encounter during the main missions.
