The live-action adaptation of Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy manga achieved success at the Japanese box office during its opening weekend from January 19 to 21. Selling 356,000 tickets, the film garnered 533,848,690 yen (approximately US$3.62 million) in its first three days after premiering last Friday.
Directed by Shigeaki Kubo at production company CREDEUS, the film’s script was written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa. Yutaka Yamada composed the music, and Hiroshi Nakagawa and Debo Akibe provided Ainu supervision. The theme song, “Kagayakerumono” (Those Who Shine), was performed by the Japanese rock group ACIDMAN.
Satoru Noda initiated the manga in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine in 2014, concluding it in April 2022. The manga has inspired four anime seasons, and there are plans for the production of the anime’s final arc.
In its fifth weekend, the SPY×FAMILY Code: White anime film slipped from the top spot to #2 after four consecutive weeks at #1. During this weekend, the film sold 189,900 tickets, generating 261,352,510 yen (approximately US$1.77 million). With a cumulative total of 3.89 million tickets sold, the film has earned a total of 5,238,789,840 yen (about US$35.49 million). The film, featuring an original story, premiered in Japan on December 22, and it achieved notable success by selling 866,000 tickets and earning 1.224 billion yen (approximately US$8.61 million) in its first three days.
Crunchyroll has announced plans to screen the film in North America in 2024.
Tatsuya Endō, the original manga creator, is credited with the original work and original character designs for the film, serving as supervisor as well. WIT STUDIO and CloverWorks collaborated once again for the animation. New additions to the cast for the film include Tomoya Nakamura as Dmitri, Kento Kaku as Luka, Banjō Ginga as Snijder, and Shunsuke Takeuchi as Type F.
