God of War’s Christopher Judge Defends Laufey as “a Banger” Despite Its Lack of Kratos

God of War Laufey is taking the franchise in an unusual direction by placing Kratos’ wife, Laufey, at the center of the next mainline adventure. That decision has already prompted discussion among fans because Kratos will not be the playable protagonist, but Christopher Judge believes the upcoming game has more than enough to stand on its own.

Judge, who has portrayed Kratos throughout the modern Norse-era games, recently discussed God of War Laufey during a Fan Expo Canada appearance. Rather than focusing on the absence of Kratos, he encouraged fans to experience what Santa Monica Studio has created with Deborah Ann Woll’s Faye taking the lead.

His confidence is particularly notable given how closely Judge is associated with the character. After years of Kratos being the face of the franchise, Laufey will instead explore the story of the woman whose influence helped shape the older, more compassionate version of the Ghost of Sparta.

Christopher Judge Says God of War Laufey Is “a Banger”

Speaking to Collider during Fan Expo Canada, Judge was asked about the upcoming game and what he believes fans should look forward to. His response was direct, particularly for players concerned about experiencing God of War without Kratos as the main playable character.

Judge described God of War Laufey as “a banger” and added that

“People are going to be blown away.”

He also singled out Deborah Ann Woll, who reprises her role as Faye and leads the new adventure.

“She’s so beloved in so many fandoms, and man, she brings it. She absolutely brings it,”

Judge said, praising Woll’s performance and her ability to carry the story.

The decision to center Faye also gives Santa Monica Studio an opportunity to explore an important part of the God of War mythology that previous games largely left unexplored. Judge has specifically expressed interest in understanding Faye’s influence over Kratos and why she trusted a man with such a violent history to protect their son, Atreus.

God of War Laufey Explores Faye’s Story After Death

Unlike the previous games, God of War Laufey begins after Faye’s death. The warrior awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife inhabited by gods and creatures from different mythologies, where she discovers that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are now threatened.

Players will control Faye as she fights through this strange realm while attempting to protect the family she left behind. The game also expands the franchise beyond its established Norse setting by introducing gods and beings from different mythological traditions.

The official PlayStation description confirms that Faye is a warrior and Kratos’ wife whose new journey begins after her death. God of War Laufey is scheduled to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.

Although Kratos will not serve as the protagonist, his connection to Faye remains central to the story. For Judge, that makes the game an opportunity to finally explore the relationship that helped transform Kratos from a ruthless killer into the more emotionally vulnerable father seen in the modern God of War games.

With Judge backing the project and Woll taking center stage, God of War Laufey is shaping up to be one of the franchise’s biggest departures yet.
