God of War Laufey Faces Bigger Pressure After Wolverine’s Divisive Launch to Prove Sony’s Cinematic Game Formula Still Works

Sony’s next major first-party game must prove that audiences still want its cinematic blockbuster formula when Faye takes over as the God of War protagonist.

God of War Laufey is heading toward its February 16, 2027 release with considerable expectations surrounding it. The upcoming PlayStation 5 title puts Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, at the center of a new mainline adventure, sending her into the mysterious Everywhen after her death.

Sony has already positioned the game as a major continuation of the franchise, but the reception surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine could make its launch considerably more scrutinized.

Why God of War Laufey Has More to Prove in 2027

The pressure on God of War Laufey is not simply about whether Faye can carry the franchise. Sony has increasingly become associated with large-scale, cinematic single-player adventures, and the upcoming game appears to retain many of those defining characteristics. Its reveal showcased dramatic storytelling, exploration and fast-paced combat, while Santa Monica Studio says it has worked to give Faye a distinct gameplay identity rather than simply turning her into another version of Kratos.

That distinction could become particularly important after Marvel’s Wolverine. If players view Wolverine as evidence that Sony’s blockbuster formula has become predictable, God of War Laufey could face similar criticism before it has even launched. At the same time, a single divisive release does not necessarily mean audiences have rejected the broader design philosophy that produced successful games such as God of War and The Last of Us.

Santa Monica Studio is therefore taking the safer route of retaining familiar foundations while changing how its new protagonist fights. According to the studio, Faye’s combat combines the movement and fluidity associated with the original Greek-era games with the close-range combat and world-building established by the Norse titles. Her greater mobility allows her to move between ground and air during combat without interrupting the action.

The biggest test, however, may be whether those changes feel substantial once players experience the full game. Faye has access to a powerful sword and unique soul-manipulation abilities, including attacks that can separate an enemy’s soul from its body and allow her to strike that soul directly. These mechanics suggest Santa Monica Studio is attempting to give Laufey a combat identity that goes beyond simply replacing Kratos with another character.

The story also gives the game an opportunity to distinguish itself. Faye awakens in the Everywhen after her funeral and discovers that plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are threatened. She must travel through this afterlife of the gods while encountering figures and creatures drawn from different mythologies.

Sony is already surrounding the game with significant franchise expectations. Alongside Laufey, Santa Monica Studio has also confirmed that a remake of the original Greek God of War trilogy is in early development, while God of War Sons of Sparta has expanded the series into a retro-inspired 2D adventure.

For Laufey, that makes the 2027 launch particularly important. The game does not necessarily need to reinvent Sony’s entire approach to blockbuster single-player games, but it will need to demonstrate why this formula still works. If Santa Monica Studio succeeds, Marvel’s Wolverine’s reception may ultimately look like an isolated misstep rather than evidence of a larger problem.
