Dave Bautista is reportedly in talks to replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos in Amazon's live-action

Amazon’s live-action God of War adaptation could soon have a new face playing Kratos. According to multiple reports, Dave Bautista is in negotiations to take over the lead role after Ryan Hurst was forced to exit the series following a serious on-set injury.

The reported casting change comes just weeks after production was halted, with four episodes already completed before Hurst suffered a torn bicep while filming a stunt. Those episodes are now expected to be reshot once a replacement is officially confirmed.

Production is reportedly scheduled to restart in October, allowing Amazon MGM Studios to keep the ambitious adaptation on track instead of waiting for Hurst’s lengthy recovery.

Dave Bautista Emerges as the Leading Choice for Kratos

Entertainment outlet Deadline first reported that Bautista is in talks to portray Kratos, one of PlayStation’s most recognizable protagonists. The former WWE superstar has long been linked to the role by fans thanks to his imposing physique and growing Hollywood résumé, although he has never publicly confirmed any previous casting speculation.

The possibility of Bautista playing Kratos also recalls a joke from The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, where Drax is mistakenly identified as the God of War. Meanwhile, Christopher Judge, who voiced Kratos in the modern games, reacted to earlier casting rumors in 2022 by posting on X:

“…And it’s been said I can’t read a room. Don’t get me wrong, I think Dave Bautista is great, but…”

His post reflected fans’ ongoing discussion about who should portray the Spartan warrior in live action.

Amazon’s series adapts the acclaimed 2018 God of War reboot and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök. The official synopsis states:

“Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

The adaptation focuses on the emotional father-son relationship while blending Norse mythology with large-scale action.

The cast currently includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Reports have also suggested that Amazon plans to recast Atreus for the already greenlit second season.
