Prime Video’s highly anticipated God of War television series is moving forward with a major casting change after lead actor Ryan Hurst was forced to leave the production due to a serious injury sustained while filming.
According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have decided to recast the role of Kratos, despite several months of filming already being completed.
The decision follows an accident on the Vancouver set in late June that left Hurst with a torn bicep while performing a stunt. The actor has since undergone surgery and is recovering, but the lengthy rehabilitation required for such an injury reportedly made it impossible for the production to remain on schedule. The move marks one of the rare instances where a television series has replaced its lead actor after principal photography had already begun.
Studios prioritize production schedule after lengthy recovery outlook
Deadline reports that Hurst spent months preparing for the physically demanding role, including gaining approximately 40 pounds of muscle before filming began. However, the injury significantly changed the production’s plans.
According to the report,
“while Hurst’s full recovery is a priority, the period required for it was longer than the production shooting schedule could accommodate,”
ultimately leading Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to recast Kratos.
Medical experts generally estimate that surgically repaired bicep tears require four to six months before normal activity can resume, while a return to full strength often takes considerably longer. Given the intense action sequences expected in God of War, producers reportedly concluded that waiting until 2027 was not a practical option.
Production was paused immediately following the incident, but preparations are now expected to restart in mid-August, with cameras scheduled to roll again in mid-October.

Completed episodes will reportedly be filmed again
The fantasy series, developed by Ronald D. Moore, officially entered production in February after receiving a two-season order from Prime Video. The two seasons are expected to be filmed back-to-back, a plan that reportedly remains unchanged despite the unexpected setback.
Sources cited by Deadline indicate that four episodes had already been completed before filming stopped. Since Callum Vinson, who portrays Atreus, is a child actor, using existing footage over an extended delay would present continuity challenges as the young actor continues to age. As a result, the completed material featuring Hurst is expected to be reshot once a new actor is cast as Kratos.
The series adapts the acclaimed 2018 God of War game, following Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey across Norse mythology to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ wife, Faye. Along the way, the father and son confront gods, monsters, and their own complicated relationship.
Star-studded cast remains intact despite major recast
Although the lead role is changing, the remainder of the ensemble is expected to stay in place. The cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
The adaptation is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions, with Ronald D. Moore serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Frederick E.O. Toye directed the opening episodes.
