Kratos’ story is far from over. Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that a new God of War game starring the Spartan warrior is in development, giving fans an early look at what comes after God of War Ragnarök and the upcoming God of War Laufey.
The confirmation came from Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studio’s head of creative, during the studio’s God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Barlog revealed that the next Kratos-led game will follow Laufey and connect directly to the events of that game.
Cory Barlog Confirms Kratos’ Next God of War Adventure
Barlog explained that God of War Laufey is doing more than telling Faye’s story. The game is also designed to expand the wider God of War universe and establish elements that will become important in future installments.
“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,”
Barlog said during the Comic-Con panel. He also teased that the story is
“setting up for something so amazing.”
This confirms that fans should not view God of War Laufey as a side story disconnected from Kratos’ journey. Instead, Santa Monica Studio is using Faye’s adventure to establish the next stage of the franchise.
The studio has not yet revealed the official title, release date, platforms, or full story details for the new Kratos game.

God of War Laufey Sets Up What Comes Next
Before Kratos returns as the main protagonist, players will experience God of War Laufey, which puts Faye at the center of the story for the first time.
The game follows Faye after her death as she awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from different mythologies compete for power. Santa Monica Studio has described the project as a new chapter that combines the combat movement of the Greek-era games with the character-focused world-building established during the Norse saga.
God of War Laufey is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
The upcoming game could therefore contain important story developments that directly influence Kratos’ next adventure. Barlog’s comments about Phranque, a character introduced in Laufey, further suggest that elements introduced in Faye’s journey could have significance beyond the upcoming game.
The confirmation should also reassure fans who wondered whether God of War was moving permanently away from Kratos. Earlier comments from Barlog and Laufey director Ariel Lawrence already indicated that Kratos’ story would continue, with Barlog stating that there would continue to be Kratos-focused stories within the franchise.
For now, Santa Monica Studio is keeping the new Kratos game largely under wraps. However, its confirmation establishes a clear path for the franchise: Faye’s story in God of War Laufey will lead into another major Kratos adventure.
