For fans of Ghost In The Shell SAC 2045, the Japanese original net animation that launched exclusively on Netflix in 2020, there is some fantastic news. Netflix has released a trailer for Season 2 of the highly anticipated series, which ended in a mind-bending conclusion that revealed the Sustainable War and its post-human danger two years after its original run. Netflix disclosed news about season 2 in the works during AnimeJapan 2022, following the mixed reaction to the long-running science fiction.
Season 1 is a sequel to Ghost In The Shell: SAC Solid State Society the movie. However, SAC_2045 can be watched without having watched the movie as well. It takes place in the year 2045 when Earth has turned into a dystopian hell. Much like what we expect our real future to be, artificial intelligence has taken over the world and governments use them as weapons to support their economies. They had essentially started a ‘sustainable war’ to support their economies but failed miserably and even Japan, where our story takes place, is affected.
Our protagonist is Major Motoko Kusanagi – who was previously the leader of Section 9 – a group of trained security professionals. Due to the dip in the economy, the organization disbands and everyone is headed to the US in order to become mercenaries. Along with her are her former members Batou, Ishikawa, and Saitou, and together they form GHOST – freelance war soldiers.
One day, things get complicated when GHOST is on a mission to locate arms when they are attacked by some AI drones and they find out about the discovery of ‘posthumans’ – highly intelligent and strong AI warriors. Meanwhile, a former member of Section 9, Togusa, is sent by the Japanese Prime Minister on a mission to unite the members of the security group again,
The thing that left everyone thinking and a little frustrated was the ending – in a turn of events, Togusa is invited to join the posthumans and there is no clarity of whether he joined them or from Batou’s perspective.
