The Flint City Councilman Eric Mays passed away, as announced by the city on Saturday, Feb. 24. It is itself quite saddening news for everyone.
Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said in a statement:
“This is a tremendous loss for our community and a shock to all friends and family.”
“As our community grieves during this difficult time, on behalf of Councilman Mays’ family, we ask that community members respect their privacy and allow them time and space to mourn. We continue to lift the family in prayer.”
Eric Mays, aged 65, in his third term representing Flint’s 1st Ward on the city council, was recognized for his spirited demeanor and occasional conflicts with fellowcouncil members.
Despite his national notoriety through viral videos showcasing his actions, particularly on TikTok where he amassed over 200,000 followers, Mays maintained a strong local following, evident in his re-election for three consecutive terms.
In 2013, Mays secured his council seat with a narrow victory of just eight votes over opponent Anita Brown. In the subsequent election four years later, he triumphed over Brown by a significantly wider margin, with a vote tally of 1,404 to 580.
Continuing his political journey, Mays was re-elected to his most recent term in November 2021.
Flint’s 1st Ward, situated on the city’s far north side, is delineated by Clio Road to the west, Carpenter Road to the north, Person Road to the south, and Saginaw Street to the east.
In recognition of Mays’ passing, the city announced that the flag at Flint City Hall will be lowered to half-staff, commencing Monday, Feb. 26.
