Young prisoner Bode Donovan, looking for forgiveness, enrolls in an unusual prison release firefighting program in Northern California, working alongside professional firefighters to put out large, unpredictable wildfires. Bode is offered the position in his small-town hometown, where he was once a great example of an all-American youngster until his issues started, adding to the pressure of the high-risk, high-reward assignment.
After destroying everything in his life, Bode left town five years ago carrying a dreadful secret. He has returned now with a criminal past and the chutzpah to hold out hope for a second opportunity. Bode insisted that he needed to get out of Edgewater. He hopes to be able to save lives, help others, and unquestionably demonstrate his transformation. He struggles to pull it off in an environment where many people are familiar with him. He is concealing himself because of a worse past, but in addition to the fire, too many people are aware of this evening.
Fire Country Episode 2 Recap
A flashback to Riley’s former life and a birthday celebration at the pub opened the second episode. While at the same gathering, Bode learned that his sister had begun dating Jake, who promptly broke her heart. Bode’s “rogue” behavior during the Buckeye fire made it plain that Vince would support his re-incarceration. Manny makes it obvious that he won’t decide until he has all the facts in hand.
After hearing what Bode said to his father, Sharon asks Vince about an “order” he previously gave, but Vince dissuades her for the time being. The “fire incident” of the week was a dry lightning storm that put a recreation facility in jeopardy and nearly electrocuted the jail bus that Bode had convinced Manny to take the kids onto for protection.
Jake finally admitted that he had cheated on Bode’s sister and hadn’t made amends before she killed in the car accident when Eve pressed him about how he broke Riley’s heart while tending to the driver, who had a hot asphalt block flung through the windshield and onto his chest. Bode allegedly assaulted Jake while they were rescuing Buckeye, and if Jake tells Vince, there is no way Bode won’t be sent back to jail.
Eve begs him to keep that information a secret if they are to rebuild their own family. After the lightning storm has passed, the Cal Fire team gathers at the bar to celebrate. The bartender denies Eve’s second attempt to ask Aydan out because he believes the firefighter is merely high from saving a man’s life. Sharon learns through Vince that Riley gave Bode the order to leave town and never come back when Riley went away.
An alarmed Sharon explains to her husband that she truly lost two children the day Riley died due to this “order,” and she will be damned if she misses the chance to reconnect with their kid. Vince continues, “there is more” that he believes Bode gave Jake the shiner he’s been sporting, ensuring their son’s dismissal from the fire camp program.
When Sharon asks about Manny’s decision, we find that Jake decided not to reveal the punch. Manny decides against sending Bode to another fire camp after Sharon informs him that she suffers from chronic kidney disease and wants Bode nearby. Manny adds that no matter where Bode is placed, his father’s voice would always resonates in his head when Bode queries why Manny is keeping him at Three Rock.
Manny also acknowledges that he took part in the fire camp program and that Sharon was the one who gave him a second opportunity and enabled him to join Cal Fire formally. Then Manny challenges Bode to stay and prove that he is the kind of person in whom his mother has faith and not the thief whom his father fears.
