Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi believes the future of AAA game development should focus less on pursuing the most powerful hardware and more on making the same core experience available to as many players as possible. His comments come as the final chapter of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy prepares for a simultaneous release across major platforms.
Speaking with EDGE Magazine Issue 429, Hamaguchi described the move toward a multiplatform launch as
“an inevitable outcome of the changing environment surrounding today’s players.”
He pointed to the growing number of ways people play games, including traditional consoles, PCs and handheld devices.
HAMAGUCHI SEES MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES AS THE FUTURE OF AAA GAMES
Unlike Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which initially launched as PlayStation exclusives before expanding to additional platforms, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is being positioned as a multiplatform release from launch. The game is scheduled for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
Square Enix has already demonstrated this approach with Rebirth, which arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S in June 2026. The official Square Enix release information confirms that the game is now available across PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox platforms.
For Hamaguchi, hardware preferences have become increasingly fragmented.
“[Players] are no longer tied to a single piece of hardware,”
the director explained, noting that some players specifically want to experience major games natively on handheld devices rather than relying on streaming.

SWITCH 2 HIGHLIGHTS A CHANGING DEFINITION OF AAA
Hamaguchi believes Nintendo Switch 2 is particularly relevant to this discussion because modern hardware can support experiences that were once restricted to more powerful systems. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth itself is now playable on Switch 2, demonstrating how Square Enix has adapted the remake project for a wider range of hardware.
His broader argument is that technical ambition should not be the only measure of progress for blockbuster games.
“I believe that what will be important in future triple-A game development is not how high-performance an environment we can use, but rather how widely we can deliver the core of the same experience across different environments,”
Hamaguchi said.
That philosophy could become increasingly important as AAA development costs continue to rise. For Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, bringing the conclusion to players across consoles and PC represents a significant change from the platform strategy used by the trilogy’s first two games.
