Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 14’s housing system is set for major improvements, with director and producer Naoki Yoshida revealing that the development team is working on two significant overhauls. The announcement came during a media Q&A at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, where Yoshida acknowledged the growing demand for better housing tools and even praised World of Warcraft’s recently introduced player housing feature.

Housing has long been one of the MMORPG’s most requested areas for improvement. Players have frequently criticized the limited number of available plots, the complex decorating interface, and the restrictions surrounding furniture placement. Yoshida’s latest comments suggest Square Enix is preparing to address several of those concerns as part of the upcoming Evercold expansion.

Naoki Yoshida says World of Warcraft’s housing inspired new ideas

Speaking to the press during the Berlin Fan Festival, Yoshida addressed inevitable comparisons between Final Fantasy 14 and Blizzard Entertainment’s latest housing system in World of Warcraft.

“I get the feeling that what you really want to ask is, well WoW has come up with this amazing housing system. How about Final Fantasy 14?”

Yoshida joked.

Rather than dismissing the comparison, Yoshida expressed admiration for Blizzard’s work.

“We have immense respect for the World of Warcraft team,”

he said. Yoshida added that Blizzard mentioning it had looked at Final Fantasy 14’s housing while creating its own system was “a great honour” for Square Enix. He also revealed that he has personally tried World of Warcraft’s housing feature, calling it “amazing” and describing it as “a good source of research.”

The comments reflect the healthy competition between two of the MMORPG genre’s biggest titles, with both games continuing to evolve long-established gameplay systems.

Two major housing updates are planned

The first confirmed overhaul focuses on Final Fantasy 14’s housing interface. Yoshida admitted the current system is “quite technical and not very accessible,” explaining that the goal is to make home decoration much easier for casual players while allowing them to create more elaborate designs.

Although he did not provide technical details, many players hope the redesign will include more intuitive furniture placement, expanded customization tools, and improvements that reduce reliance on advanced building techniques.

Yoshida remained secretive about the second planned update but suggested it could be even more significant.

“I think you will be much happier to hear what it is compared to the UI update,”

he teased. He also revealed that the feature is currently in the planning stage and

“there is a chance that it will get released earlier than the UI update.”

Before ending the discussion, Yoshida hinted that the mystery feature addresses one of the community’s biggest requests.

“Once we’re able to share those details, it’s probably the number one thing on the list a lot of people are requesting,”

he said.

While Square Enix has not officially confirmed what the second overhaul will include, the announcement has already generated excitement among Final Fantasy 14 players, many of whom have spent years requesting larger housing availability, neighborhood improvements, and more flexible decoration tools.
