Fable Director Says “We Stick the Landing” With an Ending Built Around a Difficult Personal Choice

Ralph Fulton says Playground Games “relentlessly pursued quality” for Fable’s finale, which will force players to weigh a major personal cost against their ultimate choice.

The upcoming Fable is taking its story seriously when it comes to the final chapter. Playground Games co-founder and game director Ralph Fulton has assured fans that the reboot’s ending received substantial attention, addressing concerns that the RPG could repeat the famously anticlimactic finale of Fable 2.

Speaking to The Guardian, Fulton explained that the team deliberately avoided treating the ending as an area that could receive less development simply because fewer players reach it.

Fable’s Finale Will Center on a Major Player Choice

Fulton acknowledged that developers can be tempted to prioritize content that most players experience, particularly when industry data suggests many players never complete lengthy games. However, Playground Games chose to give the finale significant attention rather than allowing completion rates to dictate its investment.

“It’s easy to look at industry metrics saying 100% of people start a game and only 25% finish, and decide not to invest heavily in the finale,”

Fulton said.

“We relentlessly pursued quality here.”

The director also revealed that the main story has been structured to give players considerable freedom throughout most of their adventure. The game will encourage players to explore Albion, experiment with its systems and make meaningful decisions rather than constantly pushing them toward the next major story event.

That approach changes during the finale, when players will be locked into the main narrative and face a consequential decision. Fulton teased that, in traditional Fable fashion, the ending will challenge players to consider what their choices say about them.

“It culminates in a choice that really challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost to weigh against the outcome,”

Fulton explained.

The promise is particularly notable given Fable 2’s divisive conclusion, where the confrontation with Lucien could end abruptly after a single attack. Playground’s new game appears determined to make its finale feel more substantial and emotionally connected to the player’s journey.

Fable is currently scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5.
