Nintendo Switch owners of Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed will not have to purchase the game again when its Nintendo Switch 2 version launches next month. THQ Nordic has confirmed that both digital and physical owners of the original Switch release will receive the upgraded version through a free patch.
The Switch 2 edition is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026, with Nintendo’s official store listing confirming the release date and the technical improvements coming to the new version.
Switch Owners Can Upgrade Without Buying the Game Again
THQ Nordic’s FAQ confirms that the free upgrade applies to both versions of the original game. Digital owners can install their existing Switch copy on Switch 2 before downloading the upgrade patch, while physical owners can insert their Switch cartridge into the newer console and install the game before applying the update.
There is also an important distinction regarding save data. Players using the free upgrade path can continue their existing progress after transferring their Switch save data to Switch 2. However, anyone who purchases the standalone Switch 2 version separately will not be able to use their Switch 1 save directly because Nintendo treats the two versions as separate products.
This makes the free upgrade route the better option for existing players who want to continue from where they stopped.
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Gets Several Switch 2 Improvements
The Switch 2 version is more than a simple compatibility update. Nintendo’s official listing confirms that the new edition features higher-resolution visuals, an improved frame rate, and mouse-style controls using the Joy-Con 2 controllers. The Switch 2 version also includes the Costume Pack DLC.
THQ Nordic has confirmed that the game generally runs at a higher resolution and frame rate than the original Switch version, particularly when played in docked mode. However, there will not be a separate performance or quality mode toggle.
The Switch 2 release will be available digitally and as a Game-Key Card, rather than a traditional physical cartridge. The standalone version is priced at $39.99 / €39.99 / £34.99, and THQ Nordic does not plan to offer preorders for the Switch 2 edition.
The Costume Pack situation also depends on which version players own. Buying the Switch 2 edition includes the DLC, while Switch owners who already purchased the DLC can access it through the free upgrade. Players who only own the original game’s base version will need to purchase and install the Switch 1 DLC before upgrading if they want to access it on Switch 2.

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed originally reimagines Warren Spector’s 2010 adventure, sending Mickey into Wasteland, where he uses paint and thinner to alter the environment. The remake was developed by Purple Lamp and adds abilities including dash, sprinting, and ground pound.
The Switch 2 edition will arrive on October 6, 2026, giving existing owners a free way to experience the upgraded version while newcomers can purchase the standalone release.
