Emma Stone clinched the coveted Oscar for Best Actress at the 96th Academy Awards held in Los Angeles. She earned this prestigious accolade for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in “Poor Things,” a period fantasy comedy adapted from Alasdair Gray’s novel.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the film also features acclaimed actors Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Ramy Youssef.
The character of Bella Baxter, crafted from a child’s brain transplanted into an adult body, has sparked controversy, primarily due to the film’s extensive depiction of sexuality and nudity.
Stone faced formidable competition, notably from Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” and Carey Mulligan for “Maestro.”
This victory marks Stone’s second Best Actress win, following her 2017 win for “La La Land.” Despite previous nominations for Best Supporting Actress in “Birdman” (2015) and “The Favourite” (2019), she had yet to secure a win in those categories.
”Poor Things” had already garnered Stone numerous accolades, including a BAFTA for Best Actress and a Golden Globe for Best Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
With her second Oscar win, she now joins the esteemed ranks of Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, and Jodie Foster as a double Best Actress Oscar recipient.During her acceptance speech, Stone humorously remarked,
“My dress is broken, I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken.'”
Visibly moved, she expressed admiration for her competitor, Gladstone, stating,
“It’s been such an honour to be doing this with you and I hope we keep doing this together.”
She concluded her speech by expressing gratitude to the team behind “Poor Things,” including director Yorgos Lanthimos, saying,
“Thank you for this gift of a lifetime in the role of Bella.”
Emma Stone expressed heartfelt gratitude to her parents, brother, husband, and daughter during her acceptance speech.
She lovingly mentioned her daughter, who was about to turn three, acknowledging how her presence had transformed their world into one filled with vibrant colors. She concluded this touching moment by declaring her love for her daughter, saying,
“I love you bigger than the whole sky.”
So, how happy are you?
