Ellie Kempler Controversy
Elli Kemer became a part of a controversy after her being a part of a Debutant Ball as a teenager came to light. Debutant Balls were a kind of formal Ball that included presenting debutantes during the season. Debutantes Ball requires prior instructions on the appropriate manner and social etiquette. The Ball has a strict fixed dress code of a floor-length white ballgown with long white gloves for females as it was considered a symbol of feminity of the upper class.
The purpose of the Debutante Ball is to present upper-class young women who have reached maturity to be presented to society. The women presented as debutantes were considered to be of the age to get married. Debutant was a disgusting practice of presenting young women from the upper class to eligible bachelors to set their marriage. As a teenager, Elli was a part of one such Debutante Ball, and she got the crown as the Queen Of Love and Beauty.
Ellie as a teenager, was part of a debutante ball by the name of Veiled Prophet Ball back in 1999. It was an establishment based in Missouri founded back in 1879. Kemper addressed the controversy via an Instagram post on Monday, where she thoroughly apologized for her past actions. Ellie stated that when she was 19 years old, she made the decision to participate in a debutante ball in her hometown.
The century-old organization responsible for holding the debutante ball had a sexist, elitist, and racist past that she wasn’t aware of as a teenager. She also stated that even though she wasn’t aware of the organization’s past, her ignorance isn’t an excuse for her past actions. She pacified her fans by stating she could have educated herself before participating in the century-old tradition, and I reject white supremacy. Ellie also acknowledged her privileges as a white woman belonging to an affluent family.
Ellie further added that she firmly believes in kindness, inclusiveness, and integrity, and she tries to live her life in agreement with those values. In the end, she stated that organization which doesn’t stand by these values should be held accountable. Later the organization also released a statement in their defense where they wrote that their organization believes in promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equality with no regard for race and religion.
The organization also wrote they reject racism of any kind and have never partnered with an association harboring these beliefs. Ellie became a part of the controversy after an old photo of a teenage Kemper resurfaced and went viral on the eve of Memorial Day weekend.
The reason it sparked rage amongst the netizens was that Kemper was involved with the St. Louis Organization, an organization known to exclude people of color while celebrating wealthy white people. Many celebrities came in Kempler’s support and acknowledged her heartfelt apology by sharing her post.
