BBC’s comedy series, Dreaming Whilst Black, will be coming out with Episodes 3 & 4 this week. The platform hosts many shows, but only a few manage to ditch the usual plots and bring something new to the table. Dreaming Whilst Black is that kind of show and has been airing on BBC since 24th July 2023.
Adjani Salmon is the creator as well as the main protagonist of this series, where he plays the role of Kwabena, an aspiring filmmaker. What makes Kwabena so special is his love for movies and determination to get into a fully packed career, even if it means putting his current job at risk.
Being almost broke, Kwabena earns his living by working as a recruitment officer for a company, where we see him dealing with microaggression from his coworkers every once in a while. When an opportunity to finally pursue his dreams arrives, Kwabena struggles to manage his filmmaking job with his reality.
Asides from Adjani Salmon, the rest of the cast includes Dani Moseley in the role of Amy, Demmy Lapido as Maurice, Rachel Adedeji plays Funmi, Babirye Bukilwa plays Vanessa, and Martina Laird stars as Aunt Polly. Dreaming Whilst Black was originally only a web series, but seeing the positive reviews it garnered, BBC decided to start airing it on television.
Dreaming Whilst Black Episodes 1 & 2: Recap
In the previous episodes of Dreaming Whilst Black, we see that Kwabena works in the HR Department as a recruitment officer. He interviews a young man that seems to have been fired from many of his previous jobs. Later while walking down the street, Kwabena listens to podcasts about people in the film industry.
In another scene, we see him running into a beautiful black woman named Vanessa on the bus. He thinks about talking to her, and we are shown a daydream he has about joking around with her. However, he quickly comes back to reality and gets about his day.
When Kwabena finds one of his old best friends, Amy, he asks her about her current job. She had just returned from Lagos and was working in the film industry. Amy seemed to be okay with the job she was doing even if they discriminated against her and gave promotions to employees that were much less experienced than her.
Seeing that Amy could be his way into the filmmaking job, Kwabena asks her to give one of his scripts to the producer and director of the place Amy works and see what they have to say about it. Kwabena later receives a call letting him know that his script turned out to be great and he was being called in for a meeting.
When the day of the meeting arrives, Kwabena is stuck in his current HR work and has to decide what he values more quickly. Filmmaking was something that he had always wanted to make a career in, while the HR job was something that paid his rent and kept him from going completely broke.
Kwabena starts working on his film Jamaica Road but has to take up another job, which is working as a food delivery person. The girl he met on the bus, Vanessa, seems to show an interest in him, thus taking his romantic life to another level. Despite Vanessa showing that she is into Kwabena, he somehow still ends up feeling inferior toward her.
