Square Enix has officially revealed new technical details for the upcoming release of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware, confirming performance targets, visual modes, and key limitations ahead of launch on the upcoming console platform.

Switch 2 Upgrade Brings Dual Graphics Modes

Following its announcement for the new system, Square Enix clarified how the game will run on the upgraded hardware. Players will be able to choose between two distinct graphical settings designed to balance performance and visual fidelity.

In Performance Priority Mode, the game targets a smooth 60 frames per second while running at 1080p resolution. Meanwhile, Image Quality Priority Mode focuses on higher visual clarity, delivering 30 FPS gameplay at a sharper 1440p resolution. These options are intended to give players flexibility depending on whether they value responsiveness or enhanced detail.

Although Square Enix has not specified differences between docked and handheld gameplay, the Nintendo Switch 2 display itself is capped at 1080p output, which may influence how the higher-resolution mode is presented in portable play.

One of the more disappointing confirmations for existing players is the lack of backward compatibility features. Square Enix has confirmed that save data from the original Nintendo Switch version will not carry over to the new release. Additionally, there will be no free or paid upgrade path from the current edition.

This means players who already own the game on Switch will need to purchase the new version separately if they want to experience the updated performance options on the next-generation system.

The new version is also not considered a “Switch 2 Edition,” which explains the absence of cross-save support and upgrade incentives.

What’s Included in the New Edition

The updated release still includes the full content package from the original Definitive Edition, ensuring a complete RPG experience. This includes additional story chapters focused on party members, orchestral music arrangements, and the ability to switch between 2D and 3D visual styles.

Players will also receive both Japanese and English voice tracks along with bonus item sets such as equipment that alters character appearances and consumable progression boosts.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is scheduled to launch on September 24, 2026 for Nintendo’s next-generation platform. With its dual-performance modes and upgraded visual targets, the release aims to modernize the acclaimed RPG for newer hardware while maintaining its original content structure.

However, the absence of upgrade support may influence how returning players approach this re-release, especially given its unchanged content structure outside of technical enhancements.
