More than two decades after Donnie Darko became one of the most influential cult science fiction films of the 2000s, filmmaker Richard Kelly is finally expanding the mysterious universe with a new sequel story. The director has announced The Philosophy of Time Travel, an approximately 800-page novel that will continue the story following the events of the original movie.
The upcoming book will arrive in late 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Donnie Darko, and will explore what happened after Donnie’s death. Rather than immediately jumping into a traditional movie sequel, Kelly is using the novel to introduce a larger continuation of the story, with plans that could eventually include animated and live-action projects.
The original Donnie Darko was released in 2001 and followed Jake Gyllenhaal’s Donnie, a troubled teenager who experiences visions involving a mysterious figure named Frank while facing the possibility of an approaching apocalypse. Over the years, the film has developed a dedicated fanbase fascinated by its themes of time travel, alternate realities and the concept of the tangent universe.
Richard Kelly Expands the Donnie Darko Universe With New Sequel Novel
According to Variety, which first reported the announcement and interviewed Richard Kelly about the project, The Philosophy of Time Travel will take place in 1988, shortly after the events of the original film. The novel has been written by Kelly over the last decade and is designed to explore the aftermath of Donnie’s death while expanding the mythology behind the movie.
Kelly explained to Variety (source) that the sequel was always intended to be much larger than a single follow-up project.
“I’ve kept in touch with all the cast over the years,”
Kelly told Variety.
“I’m fairly certain they’re aware that I’ve been working on all this stuff, everything, and the sequel is so big that this book starts off in the 14 months after Donnie’s death.”
The filmmaker revealed that his long-term vision includes a story that could eventually move decades into the future. Kelly hopes the novel can serve as the foundation for future adaptations, including an animated or motion-capture project before potentially moving into live-action.
The Novel Will Explore New Perspectives After Donnie’s Death

While Kelly is keeping the full story details hidden, he has teased that the book will reveal new information about the characters and the strange events surrounding the original film.
The sequel novel will reportedly use a found-document storytelling format, featuring writings from Donnie’s parents, Rose and Eddie Darko. The story will explore their attempts to understand their son’s death while investigating the mysterious events connected to the tangent universe.
Kelly also revealed that characters who appeared villainous in the original movie will receive deeper development in the sequel. According to the filmmaker, the new story will examine how these characters process the actions they committed inside the dream-like reality shown in Donnie Darko.
“I think there’s a lot of surprises when you realize who the characters really are in the reality of Southern California,”
Kelly said in his Variety interview. He added that the characters are “trying to process why they did horrible things in this dream” while attempting to understand what happened.
Donnie Darko Sequel Could Become a Multi-Film Franchise
Kelly has spent more than 20 years developing a possible continuation of Donnie Darko, with challenges involving rights, studios and the scale of the story. The director said his goal has always been to reunite the original cast while creating a sequel worthy of the film’s legacy.
“My caveat with doing a real sequel was that I want to reunite the original cast, and I want to take it onto a gigantic scale,”
Kelly told Variety.
The filmmaker has not yet approached the original actors about returning, explaining that he wants them to first experience the new story through the novel. He hopes the book will show where their characters have gone and what role they could play in future adaptations.
The Philosophy of Time Travel will also mark the first novel release from Range Literary Publishing, a division of Range Media Partners. The publisher’s chief Jeff Speich praised Kelly’s work, calling Donnie Darko an iconic story that has continued to connect with audiences worldwide.
With the sequel book arriving around the film’s 25th anniversary, fans will soon have the opportunity to return to Richard Kelly’s complex world of time travel, alternate realities and unanswered mysteries.
