The Kingdom Hearts franchise has been classified as a “billion-dollar” franchise by Disney, highlighting the financial importance of Square Enix’s long-running action RPG series within Disney’s broader gaming business. The revelation comes as Kingdom Hearts 4 remains in development and the franchise approaches its next major anniversary milestone.
Disney Games Group Executive Vice President Sean Shoptaw also emphasized how important gaming has become to Disney’s wider entertainment strategy. According to Disney’s latest gaming overview, the company increasingly views games as a way for audiences to discover its characters and worlds, rather than simply treating games as adaptations of existing entertainment properties.
The announcement places Kingdom Hearts alongside major Disney-owned properties, including Marvel and Star Wars, within the company’s billion-dollar gaming portfolio. Disney says its games business generated approximately $3.5 billion in annual consumer spending in recent years, while consumer spending surpassed $4 billion during the most recent fiscal year.
Kingdom Hearts’ Growing Role in Disney’s Gaming Strategy
Disney Games says its portfolio currently includes nine billion-dollar franchises, with more than half emerging within the last 12 years. The company is also developing new gaming properties, including Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Marvel’s Wolverine, while its broader Disney and Pixar mobile portfolio has surpassed 1 billion installs since 2014.
The recognition is particularly significant for Kingdom Hearts, which began on PlayStation 2 in 2002 as a collaboration between Disney and Square Enix. The franchise combines original characters such as Sora with worlds and characters from Disney and Pixar properties, creating a crossover universe that has continued to expand across multiple games and platforms.
Square Enix is preparing several Kingdom Hearts releases for Nintendo platforms later this year. Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind are scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. A complete Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] will also be available.
Kingdom Hearts 4 has also been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2 and is expected to launch simultaneously with the versions on other platforms, although Square Enix has not announced a release date.
The series is also set for a dedicated “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” presentation on August 15 as part of Disney’s D23 event, giving fans another opportunity to learn more about the franchise’s future.
