Delicious in Dungeon Debuts January 2024
The manga, written and illustrated by Ryōko Kui, was first published in Enterbrain’s Harter magazine in February 2014, followed by Yen Press acquiring the publishing license in 2016. The anime adaptation was announced in August 2022 and is produced by Studio Trigger. Yoshihiro Miyajima will take the director role for this piece, with Kimiko Ueno handling the scripts. Naoki Takeda will design the characters, and Yasunori Mitsuda will compose the music.
A stop motion animation titled “Senshi’s Easy Cooking!” (Senshi no Kantan Kukkingu!) was released in 2017 on YouTube to celebrate the manga’s fifth volume, followed by an animated advertisement produced by Studio Trigger in 2019 to celebrate the manga’s eighth volume.
The story begins with a group of adventurers setting out to slay a red dragon in the dungeon, only to be met with defeat and the loss of Laois’ sister, Falin, to the stomach of the dragon. It isn’t over for Falin! She has a month before she’s digested by the creature, which means Laios and his buddies have only 30 days to save their comrade!
The remaining trio, indebted to Falin’s selfless act of teleporting them to safety, return back to the dungeon in time to rescue her from certain digestion. However, all their equipment and food were left behind, and now they’re penniless with nothing to sustain themselves. This is until Laios suggests the wacky idea of eating whatever they find in the dungeons.
“Let’s eat the monsters!” Slimes, basilisks, mimics, and even dragons…none are safe from the appetites of these dungeon-crawling gourmands!”
Laios, the determined protagonist, leads the group with his strength but lacks tactical skills. His sole mission is to rescue his sister. What sets Laios apart is his unique approach to gaining knowledge about monsters – by devouring them. His secret passion for trying different creatures is amusing. Despite his excitement, Laios remains kind and composed. He is voiced by Kentaro Kumagai.
Chilchuck, the quick-witted locksmith, plays a crucial role in the group. He uncovers hidden paths and disables traps for the group. Chilchuck’s logical nature leads him to scold Laios for his poor decisions and obsession with monsters. He dislikes engaging in combat and is not fond of others attempting to take over his role within the team. He is voiced by Asuna Tomari.
Marcille is the group’s most powerful magic user, capable of effortlessly casting complex spells with minimal preparation. Unfortunately, her remarkable abilities often go unnoticed or unappreciated by her companions. Unlike her teammates, she hesitates to consume the monsters they encounter and may even refuse to do so altogether. She is voiced by Sayaka Senbongi.
Falin, Laios’ sister, possesses unique magical talents as well. She can teleport individuals using her magic and has the ability to communicate with ghosts. Tragically, she falls victim to a red dragon’s devouring jaws, setting in motion a one-month rescue mission before her eventual digestion.
With well-written characters and a unique plot, this series has great potential. We’ll have to wait for next year to fully enjoy its offerings, but the manga’s first volume is a welcoming read for those to can’t wait to get their hands on this series.
