DC Studios’ long-discussed Booster Gold television series is no longer moving forward, according to writer and showrunner David Jenkins. The update marks a significant change for one of the projects originally announced as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, leaving fans wondering about the future of the time-traveling superhero in live action.
The news comes months after DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn suggested the series was still progressing, making Jenkins’ latest statement the clearest indication yet that the HBO project has been discontinued.
David Jenkins confirms the end of Booster Gold’s development
Jenkins shared the update through a post on Threads, revealing that the series had effectively reached its end.
“My ‘Booster Gold’ won’t be moving forward. Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”
His message referenced Mahershala Ali’s recent comments to GQ, in which the actor confirmed he had moved on from Marvel Studios’ long-delayed Blade reboot.
Ali said,
“For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it… I feel ready to move on from the ‘Blade’ questions.”
Jenkins used the quote to draw a parallel between the stalled Marvel film and his own experience with Booster Gold. DC Studios has not officially commented on Jenkins’ statement.
The Booster Gold series was first revealed in January 2023 during James Gunn and Peter Safran’s announcement of the first chapter of the rebooted DC Universe. The project centered on Michael Jon Carter, better known as Booster Gold, a fame-seeking hero from the future who travels back in time using advanced technology to become a celebrity superhero.
The character is widely recognized in DC Comics for partnering with Blue Beetle and being accompanied by his robotic assistant Skeets. Although Booster Gold has appeared in several animated DC productions and video games, he has never led a live-action television series.
Jenkins, best known as the creator of HBO’s Our Flag Means Death, joined the project in July 2025 to write the pilot and serve as showrunner if the series received a full order.
Earlier this year, James Gunn stated that The Authority was no longer in development while saying that Booster Gold and Paradise Lost were still being worked on. Jenkins’ latest update now suggests that plans have changed behind the scenes.
Despite the setback, several projects from Gunn and Safran’s original DC slate—including Superman, Supergirl, Creature Commandos, Lanterns, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and Paradise Lost—remain at various stages of development or release.
