The American rock band called Daughters was first formed in 2002 and is based in Providence, Rhode Island. The music band has a total of four members, including Alexis Marshall, who is the leading man and the lead vocalist of the group, Nicholas Andrew Sadler, who is the band’s guitarist, Jon Syverson, the band’s drummer and the bassist; Samuel Moorehouse Walker.
Only three days after the announcement regarding the band’s formation, they released their first-ever EP titled Daughters, one that they even got to perform at the Munch House in Providence. The band took their time figuring out their sound, as they initially started off with a collaboration between hardcore punk and heavy metal sounds but slowly settled at a genre of music which is described as noise rock.
The band went through its own fair share of internal conflicts, which even caused bandmates Marshall, Sadler, and Walker to even leave the band at different points in time. While their disbandments were never made public, they ended up resolving their conflict and coming back together. Eventually, Sadler did end up leaving the band and even made it public, though somehow they still got together to produce a third album titled Daughters.
Though fans have always eagerly waited for the band to release music or perform live, Daughters has never really followed a schedule and has always been on again and off again. Despite the irregularities in their music, their songs have received much critical acclaim and recognition.
Their fourth album and most recent album titled, You Won’t Get What You Want, received much love from fans though it also ended up becoming their last music video as a band. And while the rock band pushed the image of a group that somehow always found its way back to its roots, one of the members found himself caught in the middle of some serious controversy and allegations, one that tainted the entire group’s reputation.
Daughters Controversy
It was in October 2021 when the musician Kristin Hayter, better known by fans as Lingua Ignota, took to her social media to reveal to the public all of the band, Daughter’s lead vocalist, Alexis Marshall’s abusive tactics from the time of their relationship from July 2019 to June 2021.
She accused the singer of physical and emotional torture and abuse, rape, psychological abuse, and manipulation. She revealed that things got so bad for her that she had gotten to the point of contemplating suicide in 2020.
She wrote an entire statement mentioning all the allegations and also uploaded it on her Twitter profile. It mentioned that Marshall had, at a lot of different times, ‘penetrated her’ completely while she was asleep. This was obviously, done with her consent, and when she would say no to such acts, the singer would find manipulative ways to coerce her into having sex with him.
She revealed that things got so bad that she just ended up saying yes to his demands a lot of times because she was scared that he would get upset and try to cheat on her or physically hurt her. The statement also mentioned an instance where Marshall had allegedly hit her so badly that she ended up hurting her spine.
After their relationship ended in 2021, Kristen apparently discovered a lot more about Marshall’s toxic and disturbing behavior toward other women. She found out that he has an alleged history of sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, and even assault toward his other long-term partners.
She learned that his repetitive behavior has been abusive and exploitative for a very long time. Marshall, the accused, has since responded to these allegations by denying them all, saying that his relationship with Hayter was beautiful and loving though it was unhealthy for them both.
He denied indulging in any form of abusive behavior toward her, also saying that he would look into legal options that he could take against Hayter for spreading false defaming information about him. While we have not heard from the two since, the band, Daughters, announced that they would be going on an immediate hiatus and even canceled their show at Poisson Rouge in New York City.
