The tale of the Concubine Scandal begins when Baek Hwa Yeong is on her way to the Imperial Palace or the Hwanghyeon Palace. As one of the best families in Hwacheon, they decided to send Baek Hwa Jin away. Baek Hwa Jin was now sixteen and she was recommended by Baek Hwa Yeong.
Until then, Baek Hwa Yeong thought her father and Baek Hwa Jin would take full responsibility, and it had nothing to do with her. But not until the envoy from the Palace brought a nameplate with Baek Hwa Yeong’s name written on it. And now she could not go against the Emperor.
Even if Baek Hwa Yeong did not want to attend it, she would have to be at the Imperial Palace formally and take part in the election for half a year. Though Baek Hwa Yeong tried to run away even at the last moment, she somehow ended up in front of the Imperial Palace and caught the Emperor’s eyes.
Previously on Concubine Scandal Chapter 19: Recap
Previously, in Concubine Scandal Chapter 19, we saw that Baek Hwa Yeong was very impatient when His Majesty asked her if she had done her assignment. Baek Hwa Yeong changes the topic swiftly, and His Majesty understands it right away.
Baek Hwa Yeong then asks His Majesty about what held him back in the inner palace this late, and His Majesty tells her that he was discussing entrance plans for the White Lotus Pavilion with his mother.
People were still skeptical that the illness was contagious. And that skepticism was, in turn, holding Shin Hui back from coming out. Though it is not contagious, it is a fact that it’s detrimental once you contact it. So it’s hard just to blame those trying to avoid it.
Baek Hwa Yeong knew a lot about this disease because she had watched someone close to her suffer from that same illness. She was young and stubborn back then, so she had intentionally stuck around him to show people that it was not contagious.
Everyone around Baek Hwa Yeong had tried very hard to keep her away from him, but she’d try even harder to shake them off by jumping over walls and windows and sometimes climbing up the roof or trees.
One day, Baek Hwa Yeong got caught by her brothers while going over the wall to get him some honey-glazed fruit at the night market, but they also got caught by the elders going over the wall to chase after her and got scolded.
Baek Hwa Yeong had been grounded for a month at that time after busting a merchant for selling fake herbal medicines. His Majesty asks her why her parents did not do something before she turned out this wild.
Baek Hwa Yeong was raised by a nanny for various reasons so she was not taught about disciplines. But they sure gave her love. All they wanted from her was for her to grow up healthy. They didn’t make her do anything that she did not want to do while providing her with everything she asked for.
Thanks to her experience of seeing someone with the same illness in the past, His Majesty thinks that Baek Hwa Yeong is convinced she knows the illness inside and out and how others perceive it. Then, the reason why she won’t finish her story on this is something His Majesty does not understand.
