That’s great news for Penrith! Securing Taylan May with a two-year extension shows their commitment to keeping talented players in the squad. It’s always a positive sign when players choose to stay with their current club, especially with interest from other teams.
On Friday morning, the 22-year-old was relieved to learn he wouldn’t face charges for his head clash with Broncos star Reece Walsh, further enhancing his week.
May’s commitment to remaining implies a potential delay in his reunion with brother Terrell at the Sydney Roosters.
The Tricolours had emerged as a viable choice for Taylan, considering the brothers’ shared ambition to join forces and the anticipated departures of numerous Roosters outside backs. St. George Illawarra also expressed interest in recruiting both siblings, especially with Terrell’s contract set to expire at the Roosters this year.
It’s evident now that the brothers won’t be making a joint move. Taylan May, recognized as one of the NRL’s standout rookies in 2022, faced setbacks due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury last year, putting his position at risk to Sunia Turuva on the wing.
However, his impressive performance after transitioning to the centres this season has established him as one of the Panthers’ most potent threats on the edge.
Although Penrith could theoretically extend an offer to Terrell, it’s improbable for the three-time defending premiers to accommodate the rising front-rower within their salary cap constraints.
While the Panthers are set to lose Jarome Luai to the Wests Tigers next year, they have recently secured upgraded contracts for both May and fellow centre Izack Tago.
The club’s confidence in Tago was validated on Thursday night as the 21-year-old scored a brace in the 34-12 victory over Brisbane.
“He was outstanding,” coach Ivan Cleary said of Tago’s performance.”
“It’s hard to back up performances at the start of the year. I don’t know why.”
“But he was a handful. The chase back he did (to save a try) was amazing.”
“Hopefully he can keep it up.:
That’s the challenge for any young player, consistency.
“He’s put two good ones together, so hopefully he can keep going.”
May’s signing leaves Turuva, Mitch Kenny, Matt Eisenhuth, and Luke Garner as the last frontline Panthers without contracts for the upcoming year.
