Christopher Nolan has added another major milestone to his legendary filmmaking career as The Odyssey has officially crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The historical epic, led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, achieved the feat after only three weeks in theaters, cementing its place among 2026’s biggest cinematic successes.
The film has earned $429.65 million in North America and $578.8 million internationally, bringing its global total to $1.008 billion. It marks Nolan’s first billion-dollar release since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 and puts the filmmaker on track to achieve the highest-grossing film of his career.
The Odyssey continues record-breaking theatrical run
The achievement is particularly notable because The Odyssey is a nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, a project many considered a challenging commercial proposition. Strong audience word-of-mouth and premium-format demand have helped the film outperform expectations across global markets.
IMAX has played a significant role in the movie’s success, contributing $257 million in ticket sales so far. Industry reports indicate the film is expected to become IMAX’s highest-grossing release ever before the end of the weekend.
Despite already joining the billion-dollar club, The Odyssey has yet to open in China, the world’s second-largest theatrical market. The film is scheduled to debut there on August 14, with a wide rollout that includes nearly 800 IMAX screens alongside thousands of standard auditoriums.
Its upcoming Chinese release is expected to further boost worldwide earnings, potentially allowing the epic to surpass both The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight as Christopher Nolan’s biggest box office hit.
The Odyssey also becomes the fifth film of 2026 to surpass $1 billion globally, joining Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael. Together, these blockbusters are helping drive one of the strongest years for the theatrical industry since the pandemic.
