Interspecies Reviewers Creator Amahara Says His New Anime Was Greenlit Just One Week After He Joked About a 10th-Anniversary Adaptation

A still from Interspecies Reviewers (2020), the fantasy comedy anime adapted by Studio Passione from Amahara's manga.

Manga creator Amahara, known for Interspecies Reviewers and The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace, is getting another of his works adapted into an anime. Digital Shokunin and publisher BookLive announced on November 6, 2026, that his fantasy adult comedy manga 33-sai Dokushin Onna Kishi Taichou (33 Years Old Single Female Knight-Captain) is receiving an animated adaptation.

The announcement has an unusual backstory. While preparing the afterword for the manga’s fourth collected volume, Amahara included a joke about whether the series might receive an anime adaptation for its 10th anniversary. Approximately one week after submitting the manuscript, the creator was informed that the project had actually been approved.

In a statement released alongside the announcement, Amahara recalled his reaction:

“I remember thinking, ‘It actually came.’ Now that it has been decided, I am looking forward to waiting for the day it is released.”

Amahara’s statement was specifically about the unexpected confirmation, rather than an extensive interview about the adaptation.

33 Years Old Single Female Knight-Captain Reveals First Anime Designs

The anime project is being developed to commemorate the manga’s 10th anniversary. The original series began serialization in 2015 and follows Kiga Mail, a 33-year-old captain of the royal guard responsible for protecting 12-year-old Princess Emera.

Despite coming from a noble family and earning recognition as a skilled swordswoman and military leader, Mail struggles with an exhausting workload and an almost nonexistent romantic life. She is unmarried and inexperienced in romance, with little time outside her duties. Much of the comedy comes from her conversations and interactions with her fellow female knights, including her second-in-command, Hikae Mena, and fellow captain Silvia.

Alongside confirmation of the adaptation, Digital Shokunin unveiled the anime’s official title logo and a character design sheet featuring three female knights from the main cast. The production team also released a commemorative music video titled Boogieing☆Dance Kishi., performed by Yukika. The video uses panels from the original manga to celebrate the upcoming adaptation.

Interspecies Reviewers Creator Returns With Another Adult Fantasy Comedy

Amahara is already familiar to anime audiences through Interspecies Reviewers, which became the subject of international distribution controversy during its 2020 television run. Funimation removed the series from its streaming service after three episodes, explaining that it fell outside the company’s content standards and that removing it was preferable to substantially altering the show.

Another of Amahara’s works, The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace, received a television anime adaptation produced by MAPPA in 2021.

However, the newly announced 33 Years Old Single Female Knight-Captain adaptation still has several unanswered questions. Digital Shokunin has not revealed its animation studio, director, voice cast, release date or broadcast and streaming format. Fans will have to wait for further announcements to learn how the production will bring Amahara’s adult fantasy comedy to television.
