China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Thursday that the United States continues to harbor misconceptions about China and has failed to fulfill its commitments, despite progress made since the meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping last November.
Speaking at a press conference during the National People’s Congress in Beijing, Wang stressed the necessity for mutual respect and recognition of differences for bilateral exchanges to continue. He criticized the U.S. for persisting in its erroneous perception of China and extending its list of unilateral sanctions.
Wang highlighted Biden’s assurances that the U.S. wouldn’t pursue a new Cold War or attempt to alter China’s system or endorse Taiwan’s independence. However, he expressed concerns about the escalating accusations against China by the U.S., reaching what he termed an “unbelievable level” of accusations.
In a broader discussion covering various geopolitical issues, Wang addressed China’s relations with Russia, the Ukraine conflict, Europe, the economy, and artificial intelligence.
He emphasized the need for human control over artificial intelligence and announced China’s plan to submit a draft resolution on AI to the United Nations General Assembly.
With an uneasy detente between the two superpowers, Wang urged the U.S. to understand China’s historical development trend and engage in interactions with China in an objective and pragmatic manner.
China faces ongoing geopolitical challenges on multiple fronts, including tensions with Europe, Japan, and the Philippines. Wang expressed China’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with Russia and announced an expansion of China’s visa-free travel scheme to several European countries.
